Can I Install V-Series Vinyl Cutter as
Printer
Last Modified on 27/12/2015 2:50 pm CAT

The V-series vinyl cutters can be used to cut from many different types of designing software such as
Adobe Illustrator,Corel draw, Inkscape etc if it is installed as a printer.

V-series vinyl cutters 2013 and 2014 models can only be installed as a printer on Windows 7 and
other lower versions of windows

Note: V-series vinyl cutters 2013/2014 models cannot be installed as a printer on windows 8 and above as
our printer drivers are not compatible with these versions of windows, so you will be required to have a
cutting software such as FLEXI SIGN which is obtainable from our warehouse and we offer lifetime support
on the software as well as the machine its self or you can buy a V-smart vinyl cutter which can be installed
as a printer on every windows operating system

V-series vinyl cutters are compatible with other cutting softwares such as ARTCUT which is also obtainable
in our offices but we don't offer support on it.

(Applies to the V-Smart Range of Vinyl Cutters )

Symptom:

The cutting head does not travel all the way across the cutting area or gets stuck on the far left hand side of
the vinyl cutter.

Solution:

The V-Smart Vinyl Cutter model type has changed, since the device is digitally controlled, this can be
changed using the LCD Screen and the Control Buttons. To change the model type of the device, firstly,
press the LEFT button to move the Cutting Head away from the Home position (far left of the device), then
switch off the V-Smart using the On/Off switch, then turn the V-Smart on again, as the device is turned On,
quickly look at the LCD Screen to view the boot information for the device, this contains the firmware
version, model type and ID of the device:

Press the MENU button while the boot screen is displayed, this will then change the MODEL TYPE on the
LCD Display, as shown below:

Keep pressing the MENU button until the correct MODEL TYPE is displayed for the device, then press the
ENTER button on the keypad to accept the selection.

12
The MODEL TYPE has now been changed to the corresponding type of the device and the cutting area and
movement of the Cutting Head will now be correct.

How To Create Toolpaths Using
ArtCAM On A MetalWise CNC
Plasma Cutter
Last Modified on 04/02/2016 9:02 pm CAT

Advanced Machinery and Delcam have collaborated to produce a post-processor for use with the MetalWise Plasma
Cutter range. This allows for easy creation of MetalWise Plasma Cutter toolpaths using any version of ArtCAM

Toolpath Creation
First step is to design your work piece in ArtCAM as you would with any design, once the design work is
completed the creation of the toolpath can begin, as with any Plasma Cutting job, the processes must start
from the inside outward

In this example, (a flange), all the inner circles must be selected first, as we are cutting profiles for this
article, a Profiling Toolpath is selected:

1. Make sure the Profile strategy is selected to Inside all Selected Vectors

2. The Finish Depth can be set to 1, (a zero value will not be allowed), the depth of cut is controlled on the
Plasma Cutter Control Unit by the use of Power and Speed based on the material being cut

3. Select a small tool like a 1.5mm End Mill, this will be more than sufficient for the toolpath creation to
Plasma, set the Cutting Direction to Conventional

4. A Lead In and Lead Out setting Distance of at least 10mm in a Circular Arc of Radius 10 is recommended,
cutting a square shape can use a Linear Lead In/Lead Out

34
5. (a) Make sure there are No Ramping Moves and No Bridges selected

5. (b) Set the Material Thickness to 1, depth of cut and the material thickness is calculated and set on the
Plasma Control Unit by means of the Speed and Power settings on the Metalwise Plasma cutter

5. (c) Click the Calculate Now button to calculate the Inner Profiles toolpath

This process must be repeated for the Outside Profile, select the very Outside Profile Line of
the designed object and again select a Profile Toolpath strategy

6. The only setting that will change for the Outside Profile is the Profile strategy, it must be for Outside and
not Inside this time

7. Repeat the Settings from Point 2 to 5 and then Click on the Calculate Now button to complete the
calculation of the Outside Profile Toolpath

8. In the Project Window of ArtCAM, right-mouse click Simulation and select Simulate All Toolpaths

9. Once the Simulation is completed the simulated toolpath results can be seen including the Lead In and
Lead Outs (indicated below), any changes needed can then be done on the individual toolpaths and re-
simulated if necessary

35
10. Once a satisfactory result has been achieved via the Simulation in ArtCAM, the Toolpath must be saved,
in the Project Window, right-mouse click on Toolpaths, then select Save Toolpaths As

11. On the Save Toolpaths window, select the Machine File Format drop box and select the MetalWise
Plasma(mm)(*.tap) Post Processor

36
12. Click on the Browse button to select the location where the toolpath must be saved and give the
toolpath a name (user defined name), then click the Save button. This will save the Toolpath to the location
that was selected with the User Defined Name set for the file (e.g. abc123.tap)

13. Browse to the location that the file was saved to, it can be copied directly to a USB Flash Drive for
delivery to the MetalWise Plasma Cutter control and copied to the device. The file can also be opened via
Notepad, the Post Processor generates generic G-Code that has been formulated for use with the
MetalWise Plasma Cutter range specifically

37
Once the toolpath file has been copied via USB to the MetalWise Plasma Cutter the cutting process can be
run with confidence

What Is A Media Sensor And How Does

It Function?
The FastColour Large Large Format Printer has a Media Sensor pre-installed on it. It is securely situated
between the first 2 Pinch Rollers on the right side of the Printer.

The main core functions of this Media Sensor are as follow:

After switching the Printer ON, the printer head will move from left to right, then back again to its origin
position.
What follows next is that the Printer will perform its "cleaning process", making sure that all is in order
before printing commences.
When the Vinyl is being inserted/fed into the Printer, while the Pinch Rollers are up, it will slide/pass
over the Media Sensor.
The Media Sensor ensures that there is adequate Vinyl in the Printer before any printing work
commences and will indicate a red light(dot) on the Vinyl inserted. (see below picture)

While the printing work progresses and either the Vinyl is skew or it is almost finished, the Media
Sensor will immediately alert the User, by stopping the printing work.
At this time, the User will be aware that the is an error regarding the Vinyl that was inserted.

Lifespan & Functionality of 90w
Laser Tuber
Last Modified on 04/02/2016 9:47 am CAT

What is the Lifespan of 90w Laser Tube and How many hours does it have?

The Laser Lube has to be operated under maximum working current to qualify for our laser tube
warranty. To get Maximum Lifespan of the Laser Tube, optimal current has to be used in all time.

The Laser Power Supply that is installed in our Laser Machines if you purchased a laser tube with,
the maximum output current is at optimal current, to ensure that you have the longest lifespan
possible.

If you've installed the Power Supply yourself, please test the current after you've installed the Laser
Tube, to ensure that it is protected by our laser tube warranty. The Laser Tube's lifespan will be
shortened rapidly by long term usage under over-high current. This will leave a Noticeable mark,
resulting in the Laser Tube falling out of the laser tube warranty.

# Maximum lifespan is lab tested result and is provided by the Tube Manufacturer. There is no guarantee that the Laser
Tube will reach Maximum Lifespan, even if you follow the guidelines all the time.

Motors Fundamentals
Last Modified on 26/02/2016 11:16 am CAT

Motors Fundamentals
What the difference between AC motor and DC motor?

An AC motor is an electric motor that is driven by an alternating current (AC).

A DC motor is any of a class of electrical machines which converts direct current electrical power into
mechanical power. The most common types rely on the forces produced by magnetic fields.

What’s the difference between 2-phase motor and 3-phase motor?

The 2 phase motors operate on a two phase power supply. This means the generator has two coils
located 180 electrical degrees apart.
The 2 phase motors will run on single phase if you can get is started. The 2 phase motors rely on the
displacement of the coils to impart starting torque
The 3 phase motors are most widely used for industrial applications mainly because they do not
require a starting device.
The 3 phase motors also have very simple and rugged (almost unbreakable) construction, hence they
are very reliable and having low cost.
Lastly the 3 phase motors have high efficiency and good power factor with minimum maintenance
required

But these 3 phase motors also have some disadvantages, for example: the speed decreases with the
increase in load, just like a DC shunt motor and if speed is to be varied, it then sacrifices some of its
efficiency.

What’s the difference between Stepper, Servo and Linear motors?

A stepper motor is an electromechanical device, which converts electrical pulses into discrete
mechanical movements. The shaft or spindle of a stepper motor rotates in discrete step increments,
when electrical command pulses are applied to it in the proper sequence. Stepper motors are similar
to Switched Reluctance Motors (which are very large stepping motors with a reduced pole count).
A servo motor is a rotary actuator or linear actuator, that allows for precise control of angular or linear
position, velocity and acceleration. It consists of a suitable motor coupled to a sensor for position
feedback. It also requires a relatively sophisticated controller, often a dedicated module designed
specifically for use with servomotors. Servo motors are used in positional control, for example: they
can be controlled to move to a specific rotational quite accurately.
A linear motor is an electric induction motor which produces straight-line motion (as opposed to
rotary motion) by means of a linear stator and rotor placed in parallel. Basically, a Linear motor is an
electronic motor that has had its stator and rotor "unrolled", so that instead of producing a torque

94
(rotation) it produces a linear force along its length.

What the difference between brush motors and brushless motors?

A Brushed Motors has a rotating set of wound wire coils called an armature which acts as an
electromagnet with two poles. A mechanical rotary switch called a commutator reverses the direction
of the electric current twice every cycle, to flow through the armature so that the poles of the
electromagnet push and pull against the permanent magnets on the outside of the motor.

The Brushless Motors are synchronous motors, which means that their rotors and stators turn at the
same frequency. A typical brushless motor has permanent magnets which rotate around a fixed
armature, thus eliminating problems associated with connecting current to moving armature.

Composition
A CO2 laser is a type of gas laser. In this device, electricity is run through a gas-filled tube, producing light.
The ends of the tube are mirrors; one of which is fully reflective and the other which lets some light through.
The gas mixture is generally comprised of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and helium. Light produced
by CO2 lasers is invisible, falling in the far infrared range of the light spectrum.

Production of the Laser Beam

When stimulated by an electric current, nitrogen molecules in the gas mixture become excited, meaning
they gain energy. Nitrogen is used because it can hold this excited state for long periods of time without
discharging the energy in the form of photons, or light. The high-energy vibrations of the nitrogen in turn
excite the carbon dioxide molecules. At this point, the laser achieves a state called population inversion, the
point at which a system has more excited particles than non-excited ones. For the laser to produce a beam
of light, the nitrogen atoms must lose their excited state by releasing energy in the form of photons. This
happens when the excited nitrogen atoms contact the very cold helium atoms, which causes the nitrogen
to release light.

Discharge of Laser Light

The light produced is very powerful compared to normal light because the tube of gases is surrounded by
mirrors, which reflect most part of the light traveling through the tube. This reflection of light causes the
light waves being produced by the nitrogen to build in intensity. The light increases as it travels back and
forth through the tube, only coming out after becoming bright enough to pass through the partially-
reflective mirror.

Beam Power and Wavelength

Light from a CO2 laser is powerful enough to cut many materials, including cloth, wood and paper; the most
powerful CO2 lasers are used for machining steel and other metals. Although the highest-powered CO2
lasers run over 1,000 W, those used for machining are generally between 25 and 100 W; by comparison,
laser pointers are a few thousandths of a watt. Because it's in the infrared, it has a very long wavelength,
around 10.6 micrometers; it is much longer than visible light, which runs between about 450 and 700
nanometers. As continuous lasers go, the CO2 type is the most powerful in production.

What File Types Can Be Used In
ArtCAM Software, and How to
Export Files from CorelDraw for
ArtCAM
Last Modified on 04/03/2016 12:09 pm CAT

What File Types Can Be Used In

ArtCAM?
ArtCAM does not have a direct import or export function, it is possible to export or import elements into an
Open or New Model session, like the import or export of Vectors like DXF or even a 3D Model file in popular
formats like STL

To start a new project from scratch in ArtCAM without using any existing file, simply click on the New Model
button

Should you like to open an Existing Project or to start a New Project with an existing image or vector file,
then simply click on the Open Model option as shown below

Supported File Types

Once the Open Model button has been selected the Open dialog window will be displayed where the user
can browse to the existing file that must be opened from this window

Using the Files of Type drop down box will display all the Supported Files that ArtCAM can open directly,
these include Vector Files and also various Image File formats too (See list below)

132
To open a file as a Project, simply select the required file and click on the Open button, ArtCAM
automatically sizes the project to the size of the selected image/vector file

Image File Types

If an Image File like a *.jpg or a *.bmp is opened it cannot be used immediately for Machining like a Vector
file (*.dxf), because it is an image file (flat image) the image will have to be Vectorised first using the
supplied Bitmap to Vector tool which is available in all versions of ArtCAM under the Vector Creation tools

Vector File Types

Vector Files are files that contain lines of undetermined thickness, each line has a start point and an end
point, vectors are commonly used in CAD and CAM software applications where a high level of accuracy is
required, unlike a flat image file, Vector files have physical properties in a 3D space

Import Vectors (supported files)

To import a Vector file into the currently open Project, select the Vectors > Import option from the menu’s
at the top of the window

Several file types can be imported from the Vector Import function (as seen below) the most common and
easiest to use is the DXF file or the DWG file which are both AutoCAD formats

Import 3D Model (supported files)

To import a 3D Model file into a currently opened Project, select the Reliefs > Import 3D Model option from
the menu’s at the top of the window

133
Several file types can be imported from the Import 3D Model function (as seen below) the most common of
these file types is the STL model file format which most solid modeling applications can produce either by
saving or exporting to the STL format

Using Other Graphic Applications

Most popular Graphic Applications have the function to export or save files in other file formats, if designing
is more comfortable in another Graphic Design package then simply make sure that the application being
implemented is able to export or save files in a format that is supported by ArtCAM

CorelDraw
The export function of CorelDraw has the following file types that can be used in ArtCAM (see below)

Adobe Illustrator
The export function of Adobe Illustrator has the following file types that can be used in ArtCAM (see below)

134
In both examples above, the applications have options for several file types that can be used with ArtCAM,
but keep in mind, that Vector file types (AutoCAD) are the preferred type as they can be used immediately
in ArtCAM without any further modification, any Image file type has to be Vectorised in ArtCAM before they
can be used for CAM processes
