Field of application and function 2
Functional description 2.3

2.3 Functional description

The principle of the SFT load cells is that of the dependency of the
resonant frequency of an oscillating wire on the mechanical wire
tension.
An unknown load changes the wire tension of the load sensor. The
onboard microprocessor detects the resulting change in frequency
and converts it to a digital weight signal. The serial interface transmits
the linearised and temperature-compensated signal to the connected
controller.

Mounting 4
Unpacking 4.1

4 Mounting

▲ The device may only be installed, connected and put into

CAUTION operation by a qualified electrician.

Ambient conditions
WARNING ▲ Install load cells only in an environment in accordance with the
technical data (see Section 3).

Cable Routing
WARNING ▲ Route the SFT cable away from Hazardous Live parts.

4.1 Unpacking

• The load cell contains sensitive mechanical and electronic compo-

NOTE nents. Do not throw, knock or drop the load cell. Protect the load
cells against impact.
• Do not pull or move the load cell by using the cable.

 Unpack the load cells carefully.

 Check the load cells for transport damage.
Report any damage immediately to Coperion K-Tron.

4.2 Preparing mounting

▲ Do not let any forces (torsional and lateral forces) act on the load
NOTE cell during mounting and centering.
▲ Keep load cells away from heat. Remove the load cells before
carrying out welding operations on the weighing frames.
▲ Never open the load cells, this leads to maladjustment and
possibly to destruction of the load cells.

The load cell is fitted with an internal locking device, which allows an
overload of 200% or underload of 50 % of the weighing capacity.

 If loads over 200 % are to be expected, provide a limiting control

at the weighing system.
 Before mounting the load cells clean the mounting site.

4 Mounting
4.3 Positioning of load cells

4.3 Positioning of load cells

There are two possible ways of grouping the load cells:
• 3-point weighing system for rigid frames
• 4-point weighing system
 Group the load cells in such a way that the weight load is, as far
as possible, evenly distributed amongst the load cells
(see Fig. 4.1).

4.4 Mounting the load cell

4.4.1 Mounting tolerances
 Adhere to the following mounting tolerances during installation of
the load cells (see Fig. 4.2).
– Deviation of parallelism between upper and lower fixing levels:
max. 3°
– Max. deviation of the upper to the lower points of support: ±4 mm

4.4 Mounting the load cell

4.4.2 Assembly instructions for the side stop (option)

The pendulum support in the load cell compensates thermal
expansion and slight mounting tolerances. Radial excursions cause
restoring forces under load, which maintain the self-centered position
of the moving system components. No lateral forces act on the load
cell.
The side stop ((1), see Fig. 4.3) is on its outer side firmly bonded with
the earth. The side stop limits the radial excursions of the load cell to
4 mm.

Fig. 4.3 Assembly instructions for the side stop

• The side stop protects the weighing system from excessive

horizontal excursion. It is not intended as a lifting safeguard.

Page 18 Docu. No.: 0890018601-EN Rev. 2.0.0

Mounting 4
Mounting the load cell 4.4

 To ensure trouble-free operation and to protect the load cell

against damage install the side stop always if one of the following
conditions are to be expected:

– Lateral excursions greater than 4 mm

– Endangerment of the weighing system due to impacts, e.g. in
vicinity of transportation equipment (vehicles, traveling cranes
etc.)
– Use of feeding units with an empty weight of less than 500 kg
– Frequent change in the feed product
– Frequent dismantling of the feed product container
– Frequent activity in the vicinity of the load cells or the feed system
– Effects of wind on the weighing system, e.g. close to a hall
entrance

4.4 Mounting the load cell

4.4.3 Proposed design for assembly aid/side stop (option)

Use the assembly aid shown in Fig. 4.4 for the simple installation and
removal of the load cell with the side stop.

 Use the nut (1) to lift the hopper/frame (4) just enough to enable
installation or removal of the load cell.
 After installing the load cell, use the nut (1) to lower the hopper/
frame (4) until the clearance between the collared washer (2) and
the hopper/frame is not less than 4 mm.
 Remove the centering bushing (3) again following installation to
release the pendulum support.
