Message to the Learner and Facilitator

For the Learner:

This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is designed to provide you knowledge based on actual
learning experiences. This aims to monitor your own learning at your own schedule wherein
you can study and decide the importance of the information found in this module. Here you
will gain knowledge on what are quadratic equations, how do they differ from any other
equations and what are the characteristics of these. In this module you will learn how
quadratic equations are used in solving real-life problems and in making decisions. Please
follow the instructions carefully. Just take your time and enjoy as you answer the exercises
and always remember that math does not make simple things complicated but rather makes
complicated things simple.

For the Parent/Guardian:

Please make a follow up whether your son/daughter is following the instructions
written in this module and guide them on how to answer the exercises provided. Make sure
your son/daughter answer the exercises as honestly as possible. Feel free to contact me
through text or chat if you have some questions about this SLK.

Introduction

“Flattening the curve”; a trending topic in our society amidst this global COVID 19
pandemic. A curve that is very significant in the field of studying mathematics. A curve that
represents quadratic equations. Aside from the curve representing the pandemic, was there
any point in your life when you asked yourself about the different real-life quantities such as
costs of goods or services, incomes, profits, yields and losses, amount of particular things,
speed, area and many others? Have you ever realized that these quantities can be
mathematically represented to come up with a practical decision? You can also determine
the application of quadratic equations through this module.

What I need to know

 Identify quadratic equations

 Illustrate quadratic equations
 Practice honesty in illustrating and differentiating quadratic equations from other
expressions
 Display environmental sustainability in doing the given task

What’s New

Observe the pictures below. What can you say about the pictures?
These are two of the world’s famous bridges.
Do you know that the construction of these bridges involves quadratic equations?

Before we come to talk about these bridges, its construction, and how is quadratic
equation involved, we need to learn first and foremost what quadratic equation is all about
and how we do illustrate quadratic equations.

Suppose you are provided with the following equations:

1. 8 = 3x + 2
2. x2 + 5x = 1
3. x2 - 4x + 3 = 0
4. 2(x – 5) = x – 3
5. -x(x2 – 4) = 3(x + 1)

Can you identify which equations are quadratic?

Do you have any idea of what a quadratic equation is?

 Quadratic Equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that

can be written in the standard form of ax² + bx + c = 0, where a, b and c are real
numbers and a ≠ 0. In the equation, ax² is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term
and c is the constant term.

For example,
1. Given the equation 3x2 - 4x = - 6, is this written in standard form?

Solution:
The answer is NO because this is not expressed in the form, ax2 + bx + c = 0.
To write this equation into standard form, we add +6 to both sides of the equation
by using Addition Property of Equality. Thus, the equation becomes
3x2 - 4x + 6 = - 6 + 6. Since - 6 + 6 = 0, then the equation in standard form is 3x2 -
4x + 6 = 0, where a = 3, b = - 4, and c = 6.
The quadratic term is 3x2, the linear term is 4x, and the constant term is 6.

2. What about this equation x2 = - 5x + 14? Is this in standard form?

Solution:
No, because it is not written in the form ax2 + bx + c = 0.
To express this in standard form, we need to add +5x – 14 to both sides of the
equation by using Addition Property of Equality.
It will now become x2 + 5x – 14 = - 5x + 14 + 5x - 14.
Since - 5x + 14 + 5x - 14 = 0, then the standard form now is x2 + 5x – 14 = 0
where a = 1, b = 5, and c = -14.

The quadratic term is x2, the linear term is 5x, and the constant term is – 14.

What Is It

Now, try to ponder on the following questions.

1. What is a quadratic equation?

2. What do you call the first term, ax2, in a quadratic equation? What about the
bx? What about the c?
3. In the quadratic equation, ax2 + bx + c = 0, what do a, b, and c stand for?
4. How do you write quadratic equations in standard form?
5. In what daily life situations can you apply the concept on quadratic equations?

Mini-Lesson

Now let us recall how to illustrate quadratic equations in standard form and consider
the following important notes about the definition of a Quadratic Equation:

 A quadratic equation must have an x² term. This is what a ≠ 0 tells us.

 A quadratic equation is allowed (but not required) to have an x term.
The coefficient b might be zero, which means the x term is gone.
 A quadratic equation is allowed (but not required) to have a constant term.
(Recall that a constant term is just a number—no variables.)
The constant term, c, might be zero.

For example.

1. If you illustrate (x – 2)(x + 5) = 0 in standard form, you will multiply the two
quantities and this will become
x2 + 5x – 2x – 10 = 0,
then combine similar (like) terms. So, the standard form is
x2 + 3x – 10 = 0.
2
2. For (x + 4) = 5(x – 3), what is this in standard form? Get the product in both
sides of the equation and this will give you x2 + 4x + 4x + 16 = 5x – 15.
Combining similar (like) terms, the equation becomes x2 + 8x + 16 = 5x – 15.
By Addition Property of Equality, add both sides by – 5x + 15. Thus, becomes
x2 + 8x – 5x + 16 + 15 = 5x – 15 – 5x + 15. Furthermore, by combining like
terms, the equation in standard form is now x2 + 3x + 31 = 0.

What’s More

Write each quadratic equation in standard form, ax² + bx + c = 0 then identify the
values of a, b and c. Use a separate sheet of paper for your answers and solutions.

1. 3x – 2x² = 7 6. (x + 7)(x – 7) = -3x

2. 5 – 2x² = 6x 7. (x – 4) ² + 8 = 0
3. (x + 3)(x + 4) = 0 8. (x + 2)² = 3(x + 2)
4. (2x + 7)(x- 1) = 0 9. (2x – 1) ² = (x + 1)²
5. 2x(x – 3) = 15 10. 2x(x+ 4) = (x – 3)(x – 3)

What I Have Learned

Directions: Supply the missing information in the following statements. Write your answer in
your answer sheet.

A _________ Equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that

can be written in the standard form of ax² + bx + c = 0, where a, b and c are real numbers
and a ≠ 0. In the equation, ax² is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term and c is the
constant term. In the equation ax² + bx + c = 0, ax² is the quadratic term, bx is the ______
term and c is the constant term. The equation 2x² + 5x – 3 = 0 is a quadratic in standard
form with a = _____, b = 5 and c = -3. In 3x(x – 2) = 10 is a quadratic equation. However, it
is not written in standard form. The equivalent standard form of this is _____________.The

vegetables. The length of the garden is 6 ft. more than its width with an area of 40 square
feet. Does this situation illustrate quadratic equation? If so, illustrate the equation in standard
form. (Note: Draw the problem for better comprehension. Use your answer sheet for this
activity).
