Subject: Current Issues and Trend in Educational System

Lecture 1:

1. Identify the 3 big umbrellas in the Philippines Educational System and its
functions.

Three (3) organizations/umbrellas oversee the various levels of the Philippine educational
system. The basic (pre-university) education is supervised by the Department of Education
(DepEd). The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is in charge of
middle and secondary education, while the Commission on Higher Education is in charge of
tertiary and graduate education.

The Basic Education subcategory of the Philippine educational system covers Early Childhood
Care and Development (ECCD). And the main goal of education is to give people the chance to
gain the information and skills necessary to realize their full potential and contribute
successfully to society. Socialization is arguably the most crucial role of education. Education is
the main means by which children learn the customs, values, and abilities they need to live in
society. Since both public and private HEIs are governed by CHED, they are expected to carry
out the quadruple functions: research (creation and preservation of knowledge), instruction and
training (dissemination of knowledge), and community service (application of knowledge to
serve the community). The Commission on Higher Education is the second umbrella in the
Philippine Education System that oversees tertiary and graduate education. The Technical
Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), a government organization entrusted with
managing and overseeing technical education and skills development (TESD) in the Philippines
is the third umbrella in the Philippine Educational System. They will also design an accreditation
system for organizations engaged in middle-level workforce development and approve skill
criteria and examinations. Support initiatives and plans for technical training and skill
improvement; and. support training programs for trainers.

In short, children can now face reality confidently and have learned to fit in and get along with
others without hesitation and embody the values that each of us has the right to live in social.
For this reason also, it can appeal to learners of different ages and statuses, as well as out-of-
school youth. It helps each individual to develop holistically and provides lifelong skills to
become useful citizens of the country.
2. Discuss a topic which is trending in our educational system at present and give your
insights about it.

A new trend in our education system is currently the new curriculum "Matatag
Curriculum" which is implemented by our Vice President for Education Secretary. Sara
Duterte DepEd recently launched the MATATAG curriculum, which plans to dismantle
the current K-12 curriculum, which involves reducing the number of competencies and
focusing more on the development of basic skills such as literacy, numeracy and social-
emotional skills in kindergarten. to grade 3. According to the adapted K-10 curriculum,
subjects will be reduced from two to five: 1) Language 2) Reading and Literacy 3)
Mathematics 4) Makabansa (Nationalism) and 5) GMRC (Good Educations and Right
Conduct) . Some subjects have been removed from the primary school, for example
MTB and MAPEH are no longer among the subjects of 1st-3rd grade. Compulsory core
subjects in both primary and secondary schools are languages, mathematics, natural
sciences, ICT, physical education and arts. However, in 7th and 8th grade Technology
and Livelihood Education (TLE) subjects. In addition, some decorations/posters were
also removed from the classroom. However, the teacher can still only post on the
bulletin board but limited decorations such as classroom sweepers, classroom rules,
Vision and Mission, Panatang Makabayan.

Another is the Affordability of education. This is also one of the new trends and
problems now because not everyone has the money or financial stability to get into a
top school. In particular, we are now facing another crisis related to growing rice per
kilogram. Many cannot afford to buy basic necessities because the prices are constantly
rising. Therefore, students' studies are also affected by the fact that some of them stop
going to school because they do not have enough money to buy their needs, especially
for school needs. This is the reason why students prepare to work early to meet the
needs of their families.

The purpose why they have to change the curriculum, which is the Matatag curriculum,
is to give more or enough time in the class to focus on learning, reduce the burden of
students and get a lot of study time. Aside from that,, posters/decorations are also
removed so that students can focus on the lesson and not spend time turning and
looking at the walls which can interfere with learning. And for the continued growth of
rice, many people and students were affected. The government should find ways and
solutions to meet the demands of the necessary people. They should organize some
programs to help people meet their daily needs.
