2. Theoretical Framework

7
2. Theoretical Framework

◈ Distraction-Conflict theory
a theory of Robert Baron(1986); also called as “attentional conflict” refers to the
situation in which the person feels a strong urge, desire, or obligation to pay attention to
the distractor (i.e., mobile games) when performing their tasks, especially if the distractor
is attention-grabbing and difficult to ignore. The theory is based on the idea that being
aware of another object creates a conflict between attending to that object and attending to
the task at hand
This theory explain how concentration can be influenced by distractor; this will
help to understand how online games consume the time that can be spend to study.

8
2. Theoretical Framework

◈ Self-determination Theory
this theory suggests that humans have three basic psychological needs: autonomy,
competence, and relatedness.
Autonomy. refers to the need for individuals to feel in control of their own lives
and decisions.
Competence. refers to the need to feel capable and effective in one's actions.
Relatedness. refers to the need for social connection and a sense of belonging.
This theory states that every individual has a sense of freedom over reality and
online gaming; that helps this study to know more about the positive side of playing online
games which may uplift the negative view about online gaming.
