Question 1
A client has requested the design of a car port, 2.86 m x 5.4 m in plan with a minimum clear
height of 2.75 m, a 10° mono pitched roof and covered with S-rib sheeting. The car port must
only be supported at the four corners. The car port is to be situated in Vanderbijlpark Town at
a site altitude of 1575 m above sea level. The orientation of the car port is unknown.
Determine the overall wind forces on the structure with references to the relevant codes.

Question 2
A typical roof purlin forms part of the layout of a timber roof truss for an inaccessible roof.
The roof trusses are spaced at 4 000 mm cross centers and the purlins give lateral restraint to
the top members of the truss nodes. All members of the truss will be pressure treated with fire
retardants and moisture content will not exceed 20%.
Using grade M5 timber, design a typical purlin assuming a load of 0.7 kN/m (30% dead load
and 70% live load. Design the purlin for bending, shear and deflection. Limit the deflection to
20 mm. (25 Marks)
