Question 1 [25 Marks]

Figure 1 below shows the site location of a signboard to be erected along the R59 freeway. The
surrounding area has low vegetation cover and isolated obstacles. The site altitude is 1570 m
above sea level. Determine the overturning moment due to the wind forces acting on the
signboard using the relevant SANS codes of practice.

Question 2 [25 Marks]

A client has requested the design of the car port shown in figure 2 below, 3.5 m x 6.25 m plan
dimension, with a clear height of 2.4 m and a flat roof covered with S-rib sheeting. The car port
is supported at the four corners only. The car port is situated in Vereeniging town at a site
altitude of 1479 m above sea level and is to be occupied by a 4.7 m long, 1.9 m wide and 1.8
m high family car. Determine the overall wind forces on the structure with reference to the
relevant codes.
