PURPOSE

Calibration of Pressure gauge (DIAL/DIGITAL)

SCOPE

1] This scope covers the calibration of Pressure Gauge in house for ranges Lower range to 1300 kg/cm 2

REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

DKD-R 6-1 for calibration pressure gauge & NABL-141.

RESPONSIBILITY

Technical Manager / Calibration Engineer.

MASTER EQUIPMENTS USED

1) Dead Weight Tester (2 to 40 kg/cm2)

2) Digital Pressure Gauge (40 to 700 kg/cm2)

2. PROCEDURE

1) Visual inspection: Dial marking should be clearly visible, body should not be damaged & pointer
should not free.

2) Cleaning of the instruments: Clean the instruments (UUC & Standard ) with the help of Eather,
acetone or any volatile matters & Mulmul cloth / Tissue Paper.

3) Record the temperature & humidity in the observation sheet during the calibration.
Calibration is carried out at temperature: (20±2)°C& Rh 40% to 60%.

1. Install the experimental set up as shown in Figure (Comparison Method)

UUC OIL TANK

STD.

2. Install both the UUC & standard as per above shown block diagram, Confirm during install the UUC &
standard both the valve should be open then rotate the Hydraulic screw pump clockwise & anticlockwise
one cycle for removing the air gap from Hydraulic pump.

3. Close release valve & create 10-15% pressure according to the range of UUC by pumping the
priming valve then close the priming valve, now rotate the screw in clock wise direction to get required
pressure.

4. For leak testing pressurize both the standard and UUC* at maximum range and wait at least for ten
minutes, to ensure there is no leak in this set up.

5. Complete range of UUC* shall be covered. First take the reading in increasing direction up to
maximum point. After maximum reading has been taken, take the reading for decreasing pressure at the
same point as before. Repeat above process two times. At the time of calibration at every step minimum 30
seconds will be waiting time at maximum reading 5 minutes will be waiting time. Take at least 2 Cycles of
reading in same manner.

6. For Burdon tube pressure gauges, a waiting time of 5 minutes in between two successive cycle.

7. Industrial Concentric scale gauge: In addition to the procedure mentioned under test gage in
industrial gauge having accuracy more than 0.25% can also been calibrated in the method of comparison
against a standard test gauge in a comparator.

2) Waiting period for each observation and between increment /decrement cycle to be
taken as follows:

Calibration %ofthe No.Of No.Of Load Chain Wait time No. Of Measurement
instrument Measurement Preloading + Wait at up limit Series
Sequence Span (*) Points(With Time (**) Range (***)
Zero up/down) Up Down

A <0.1 9 3 >30 Sec 2 2 2

B 0,1....0,6 9 2 >30 Sec 2 2 1

C >0,6 5 1 >30 Sec 2 1 1

3) (*) Reference to the Span was used to allow the sequence to be selected from the table, as the accuracy
specifications of the manufacturers are usually related to the measurement span.
4) (**)One has in any case to wait steady-state conditions are reached.
5) (***)For Bourdon tube pressure gauges, a waiting time of five minutes is to be observed

1. Result will be recorded in the calibration observation sheet format No. F02(5.4/01)D
2. The overall uncertainty shall be calculated as per NABL –141. Uncertainty shall be calculated at that
point where deviation are maximum & Uncertainty components are taken from uncertainty component file
No.37.
3. The resolution of indicating device is obtained from the ratio of pointer width to the centre distance of
two neighbouring graduation lines (Scale interval) ½,1/5, or 1/10 is recommended as raion. If 1/10 is
chosen as the ration ( i.e the estimable fraction of scale interval),the scale spacing must be 2.mm or
greater. (Refer DKD R 6-1 Claus no. 8.6.1.1)
4. If the indication varies by one digital step at most when the pressure gage is not loaded, the
resolution corresponds to digital step. (Refer DKD-R 6-1 Clause no. 8.6.1.2)
5. If the reading fluctuate by more than the value preciously determined for the resolution with the
pressure gauge not being loaded, the resolution r is to be taken half the span of the fluctuation, additionally
added with a digital step and refer DKD-R 6-1 Clause no. 8.6.1.3.
6. The zero point can be et prior to every measurement cycle consisting of an increasing and
decreasing series and must be recorded prior to and after every measurement cycle. The reading is to be
made with the instrument being completely relieved and refer DKD-R 6-1 Clause no. 8.6.2
7. When mean value re stated, the hysteresis is determined from the difference of the zero point
corrected measurement value of the increasing & decreasing series and refer DKD-R 6-1 Clause No. 8.6.5.
8. Affix the calibration sticker on UUC*.
9. Technical manager will approve the calibration result.
10. Prepare the calibration certificate
11. Install the experimental set up as shown in Figure (Direct Method by dead weight tester)

12. Install both the UUC & standard as per above shown block diagram, Confirm during install the UUC &
standard both the valve should be open then rotate the Hydraulic screw pump clockwise & anticlockwise
one cycle for removing the air gap from Hydraulic pump.
13. Close both the valves release and priming valve. Put the initial load on Dead Weight as per
requirement. Rotate the hydraulic pump screw clockwise to get required pressure and also keep rotating
the dead weights by hand so as to ensure that the piston carrying the dead weights is free. Rotate the
hydraulic pump screw upto a point when dead weights start lifting up. Note down the observation in
respective register.
14. Then follow the point 4 to 18.

Note: In case correction factor used in calibration results, then no need to take Error factor in the
calculation of measurement uncertainty.
