1. General
This user manual describes details of testing P546 relays with the OMICRON Protection Test Template.
General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library items can be found in the
OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: ALSTOM
Model: P546
Firmware Version: 80

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 3.01 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:

 Control Center
 Quick CMC
 Ramping
 Advanced Distance
 State Sequencer
 Overcurrent
 Pause Module
 Diff Operating Characteristic
 Annunciation Checker

Any CMC test set with a NET1-B, NET1-C or NET2 interface can be used with this
Protection Test Template. In addition a CMGPS 588 is necessary.

2. Default Curves 1-4 in the Overcurrent and Earth Fault protection
3. Load Blinder V< (31.D6) in the Distance protection
4. Mutual coupling compensation (settings 30.07; 30.08; 30.09 and 30.0A)
5. Scheme Setup (20.01) = 3 Terminal
6. Phase Char (33.0A) in Phase Diff only DT is supported
7. Capacitive Charging Current Compensation (settings 33.10, 33.11)

Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the ALSTOM MiCOM P546 XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the MiCOM
S1 Agile software.

The Standard Filter for XRIO Files can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.

The Additional Information block contains a block to enter several settings of the remote relay (“Relay
Parameter Section – REMOTE RELAY”). It is necessary to enter these settings here, because they are
used especially for Current Differential Protection tests.
Further information about the Additional Information block can be found in the OMICRON PTL user
manual.

6. Specific Protection Tests

In this chapter the specific protection tests, which are not covered by the OMICRON PTL User Manual,
are described.

6.1 Distance Protection

Prefault times

For all distance protection tests the prefault time has to be set to a value greater than 1 s. Otherwise the
delta directional algorithm in the relay might not work and a fixed RCA (Relay Characteristic Angle) of 60 °
is used instead of the set Dir. Char Angle (31.E3). The test points could fail as this results in a different
directional line in the zone characteristic.

Test Model

The Mho characteristic modeled in the XRIO-converter is only valid for the Test Model selected as
"Constant test current" (ITest) or “Constant test voltage” (Vtest). If the Test Model is set to “Constant
source impedance” in the Advanced Distance module, the Mho characteristic used by the relay differs
from the drawn characteristic in the test module and the test points will fail. This happens due to the
dynamic mho expansion of the relay.

6.2 Overcurrent Protection

Test Points for testing Trip Times

The test points have to be set according to the active Overcurrent Elements. Example:
 Definite time elements with 2 test points at 0.9 and 1.1 x pickup
 Inverse time elements with 3 test points on the inverse curve

Directional Phase Overcurrent Protection

For the different fault types the relay uses different polarizing voltages than the OC test module for the
directional phase OC elements. Therefore, the directional element angles for the tests are adapted in the
OC test module.
This adaption is working for three phase faults and single phase faults but not for two phase faults.
Consequently testing of two phase faults with a directional phase OC element is NOT supported. Only
non-directional phase OC elements can be tested with two phase faults.

6.3 Phase Current Differential Protection

6.3.1 Communication Check

The Communication Check Tests are intended to guide the tester through the process of checking the
87L communications. It is assumed that the Current Differential Protection is enabled before the
communication check starts.

The testing workflow is intended to follow these steps:

1. Disable Current Differential Protection at Relay 1.
2. Check at Relay 2 that the Current Differential Protection is not working now.
3. Enable Current Differential Protection at Relay 1.
4. Check at Relay 2 that the Current Differential Protection is working now.
5. Disable Current Differential Protection at Relay 2.
6. Check at Relay 1 that the Current Differential Protection is not working now.
7. Enable Current Differential Protection at Relay 2.
8. Check at Relay 1 that the Current Differential Protection is working now.

An Annunciation Checker is used to guide through this workflow.

Attention: The “Test steps” of the Annunciation Checker show the instructions for relay 1 and for relay 2. If
you run the test the module shows you the different instructions step by step. You have to ensure that
your order corresponds to the order shown above.

The Annunciation Checker Tests have to be assessed manually after successfully performing the tests.

6.3.2 Line Diff Pick Up Current Test

The 87L Pick-up Current test has to be performed with active 87L communication. Each relay (local and
remote) has to be tested independently. During the test of one relay it has to be ensured that the remote
end does not measure any current. Otherwise the remote current would lead to an additional differential
current and therefore disturb the Pick Up Test.

6.3.3 Line Diff Trip Time Test

The 87L Trip Time Test simulates a fault on the line protected with Current Differential Protection. A relay
trip is expected. The trip time is assessed.

6.3.4 Line Diff External Fault

The faults of these test cases are located outside of the area that is protected by the Current Differential
Protection. It is simulated that the current flowing into the protected area on the first end flows out of it on
the second end. There is no differential current and therefore no 87L trip expected. After a certain time the
direction of the currents is the other way around. There is still no differential current and therefore no 87L
trip expected.
Both relays – the local and the remote one – are involved in the test. Therefore, the corresponding test
modules for Relay 1 and Relay 2 need to be open and then run simultaneously on both line sides. To
synchronize the test signals of both ends, CMGPS 588 is necessary (Extensive knowledge of CMGPS
588 is required; see OMICRON CMGPS 588 manual).

6.3.5 Line Diff Operating Characteristic

With this test cases, the 87L operating characteristic can be tested. Test points at various bias and
differential currents are used to test the shape of the characteristic.
Both relays – the local and the remote one – are involved in the test. Therefore, the corresponding test
modules for Relay 1 and Relay 2 need to be open and then run simultaneously on both line sides. To
synchronize the test signals of both ends CMGPS 588 is necessary (Extensive knowledge of CMGPS 588
is required; see OMICRON CMGPS 588 manual). It has to be ensured that exactly the same test points
are used in the corresponding test modules for both relays.
