Stem and Leaf Diagrams

Prior Knowledge:
• Identifying the mode of a data set.
• Calculating the range of a data set.
• Identifying the median of a data set.
• Understanding when the median would be better to use than the mean, when interpreting
data sets.

A stem and leaf diagram allows you to visualise an ordered data set. Each piece of data will have
a stem and a leaf. A key tells you what each value represents.

Example 1
The data set shows the ages, in years, of people working in an educational technology office.
19, 52, 49, 48, 49, 18, 27, 31, 32, 58, 23, 34, 34, 25, 34, 47, 35

Step 1: Rewrite the data set in ascending order.

18, 19, 23, 25, 27, 31, 32, 34, 34, 34, 35, 47, 48, 49, 49, 52, 58

Step 2: Split each piece of data into a stem and leaf. In this example, the stem represents the tens
and the leaf represents the units.
18 , 19, 23, 25, 27, 31, 32, 34, 34, 34, 35, 47, 48, 49, 49, 52, 58

Step 3: Continue splitting each piece of data into a stem and leaf, placing them in the diagram.

Step 4: Add a key.

in a district.

The key shows us that the stem represents the hundreds and tens; the leaf represents the units.

1. How many schools are represented in the stem and leaf diagram?

To find the total amount of schools represented on the stem and leaf diagram, we need
to count the leaves. There are 20 leaves, therefore there are 20 schools represented.

2. What is the maximum number of students currently on roll at any of the schools?

As the stem and leaf diagram is in size order, we can simply look at the last leaf and
read it with its stem. In this case, the stem is 55 on the last row, and the last leaf for
this stem is 7. This tells us that 557 is the maximum number of students currently on
roll at any of the schools.

3. What is the range of the numbers of students on roll at the schools?

To find the range, we subtract the smallest number from the largest. We already know
the largest number of students is 557. To find the smallest number, we need to look
at the first stem and leaf. The first stem is 51 and the first leaf is 2 so the smallest
number of students is 512.

557 – 512 = 45

4. What is the modal number of students on roll at the schools?

Look for leaves that are repeated together in a row to find the mode. In this case,
the 52 stem has three 5s in a row. By combining the stem and the leaf, we arrive at a
modal value of 525. As 9 appears the most in the leaves, it would be easy to think that
this was the mode. However, the 9s represent different values when combined with
their stems.

5. Calculate the median number of students at roll in the schools.

There are 20 schools represented so we are looking for the 10th and 11th pieces of
data. To find these, count the leaves in the order they appear. The 10th and 11th pieces
of data are both 539 therefore the median is 539.
