COURSE TITLE : READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY 1
CREDIT : 3 UNITS
PRE-REQUISITE : NONE
TIME ALLOTMENT: 1 HOUR/session, 3x a week ( M-W-F) 1 HOUR and 30
mins/session 2x a week (T-TH)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides a complete account of the historical events of the Philippines
occurring the pre-Spanish period: the 333 years of Spanish Rule, from 1565-1898; The American
Period from 1898-1946; the Japanese invasion from 1941-1944; the granting of Philippines
Independence on July 04, 1946; the declaration of Martial Law by the Pres. Ferdinand Marcos on
September 21, 1972; the “People’s Power” Revolution on February 22-25, 1986 overthrowing
the Marcos dictatorship and installation of Corazon C. Aquino as the new President, the
subsequent election of Fidel V. Ramos, Joseph E. Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno
Simeon C. Aquino III and Rodrigo R. Duterte.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

At the end of the semester, the student should be able to:


1. Learn the historical account of the Philippines before and after the Spanish
period: the American period; the Japanese occupation; the Martial Law
period; the People’ Power that installed Corazon C. Aquino and the
subsequent Presidents that governed the country to the present dispensation.
2. Know the different historical stages that molded the Philippines and its people
to become a Nation and State as an original Charter Member of the United
Nations.
3. To learn that our people are now unique among Asian nations possessing a
culture which is a rich blending of the Malayan, Spanish and American
civilizations.
