MAN OVERBOARD SITUATION

• Man overboard is a situation wherein a ship’s

crew member falls into the sea from the ship, no
matter where the ship is sailing, on open seas or
in still waters in port.

• A man overboard is an emergency situation, and

it is essential to locate and recover the man
overboard person as soon as possible as due to
bad weather or rough sea, the crew member can
drown or else due to temperature of the cold
water, the person can get hypothermia.

SMART SAFETY HELMET FOR

SEAFARERS
NEED FOR SAFETY HELMET
• A recent report has indicated that 24 percent of maritime accidents resulted with deaths are
the result of MOB events in US coasts (Boat US, 2012)
• A study indicates a general assumption of that approximately 1000 people falls overboard
annually (Selmy, A. S., 2016).
•24% were characterized as falls overboard
•24% died at night, 76% died in daytime
•63% did not know how to swim
•90% occurred in calm weather
•Alcohol consumption played a major part in
Accident
•27% of daytime deaths
•50% of nighttime deaths
FEATURES OF SAFETY HELMET

• This helmet aims for enhancing the safety culture Proposed design – Developed on
Adobe Illustrator Draw
that has always been an important aspect at maritime
industry particularly man overboard situation and
during ships operations.

• This helmet can help the mariners to detect all signals

transmitted by the helmet including, Man overboard
and clinical parameters like Blood pressure, Alcohol
consumption etc.
• We are using modern technologies to build safety helmet, contributing
safety measures to the maritime industry.

• An attempt has been made to bring up the working prototype based on

detailed research & analysis which will be helpful in increasing the safety
standards , using the safety helmet.

Safety Helmet Features

• Effective placing of all sensors
• Waterproof casing for battery and board
• Kill switch on the right side
• Modified design to also accommodate the face shield/mask
• Receiving Unit At Bridge : Data presentation
SENSORS AND TECHNOLOGIES USED IN
SAFETY HELMET
• Arduino Uno Board (Microprocessor chip)
• Alcohol Sensor ( To detect alcohol consumption level)
• Accelerometer (To detect man overboard situation)
• Human Body Pulse Sensor (To detect the pulse rate )
• GPS – Neo 6m Module ( To detect the current location of the person overboard)
• Pressure Sensor (To detect the depth of person below water)
• Transmitter And Receiver ( To send the data to the bridge)
• Lithium Ion Battery ( To supply power )
PROGRAMMING OF SENSORS
The sensors are programmed in python and C++ coding language using ARDUINO IDE SOFTWARE
