2. Background
IChemE’s global network of member community groups are central to delivering its vision of
advancing chemical engineering's contribution worldwide for the benefit of society.
IChemE member community group activities are devised and delivered by members.
Member groups (MGs), special interest groups (SIGs), and early careers groups (ECGs) create
globally accessible output, local activities, and networking opportunities.
The Education SIG (EdSIG) seeks to further information exchange between universities and industry,
develop a network of interested and committed chemical engineers, and share expertise and ideas
for best practice in chemical engineering education. Although focused on undergraduate and
postgraduate education, it is also involved in continuing education activities as well as promoting the
profession in schools.

3. Main committee positions, duties, and responsibilities


The purpose of the student representative is to:
▪ represent student views on curriculum development and also assessment techniques
▪ provide ideas on how to publicise the benefits of IChemE membership to the student body at
each institution
Volunteers who occupy committee roles typically:
▪ try to attend all meetings, or send apologies for absence
▪ prepare for the meeting by reading the agenda, documents, and any emails before the
meeting
▪ share ideas and views on documents shared by the committee and items discussed during
meetings
▪ demonstrate skills, knowledge and interests that relate to specific MG or SIG volunteer roles
(e.g., STEM liaison, University liaison, PEI engagement, event's organiser etc.)
▪ take ownership and accountability for the fulfilment of assigned tasks
▪ participate in the planning and delivery of an annual programme
of activities supporting IChemE’s strategy
▪ may support specific activities such as putting together the EdSIG newsletter or liaising
regarding social media communication.

4. Appointment method

Selection from those who have submitted a brief statement (maximum 400 words) of relevant
experience and why they are interested in the role. Please provide information on where you are
studying and your current year of study. Applications will be reviewed by the Education SIG Chair

5. Period of appointment
Student representative committee members can stay in their roles for up to two years. One year of
which must be undertaken whilst they are in a programme of study.

6. Commitment required

We anticipate that this volunteer role will require a commitment of approximately two to three hours
per month.

7. Training

The role is fully supported by the Regions Team and IT. Training will be provided to support members
in this role.
Other standard volunteer training, eg General Data Protection regulations (GDPR) training, will be
provided by IChemE. In some instances, an annual update may be required.

8. Person specification

This role is open to both postgraduate and/or undergraduate students.


To successfully fulfil their role and meet their responsibilities, student representatives should:
▪ be a student member of the Institution and abide by IChemE’s By-laws
▪ be in a programme of study for at least one year of their two-year term of office in the
volunteer role
