Introduction
Momentum is a word that we hear used colloquially in everyday life.
We are often told that sports teams and political candidates have "a lot of
momentum". In this context, the speaker usually means to imply that the
team or candidate has had a lot of recent success and that it would be
difficult for an opponent to change their trajectory. This is also the essence
of the meaning in physics, though in physics we need to be much more
precise. Meanwhile, impulse is a term that quantifies the overall effect of a
force acting over time.
Because of the impulse-momentum theorem, we can make a direct
connection between how a force acts on an object over time and the motion
of the object.
One of the reasons why impulse is important and useful is that in the
real world, forces are often not constant. Forces due to things like people
and engines tend to build up from zero over time and may vary depending
on many factors. Working out the overall effect of all these forces directly
would be quite difficult.¹
Additionally, changes in momentum happen every time. A fast-moving
car that suddenly stops might have damaging effects not only to the vehicle
itself but also to the person riding it. Various devices have been installed in
vehicles in order to ensure the safety of the passengers. The use of seatbelts
is even required by law in order to lessen injuries from car crashes.
Applying this concept while observing the “Egg Volleyball” experiment,
the choice of material may prevent the egg, a naturally-fragile material, from
breaking by increasing the time of impact, therefor lessening the impact
force. If one throws an egg directly to a wall, it will definitely break. This is
because when the egg’s motion is abruptly stopped, its momentum suddenly
changes.
However, if it is thrown on a piece of cloth, the time of impact will be
increased due to the cushioning effect of the pice of cloth, therefore, it will
lessen the impact force.²
Results
The egg successfully did not break while conducting the experiment.
Total of three (3) throws back and forth from the 2 teams were completed.
The factor affecting the momentum of the object was applied and helped in
accomplishing the task.
