WHAT IS CITY
BRANDING

City branding is the process of creating and managing a brand image for
a city or urban area, with the aim of promoting its unique characteristics
and attracting tourists, investors, and businesses. According to Kotler et
al. (2002), city branding involves creating a distinctive image and
reputation for a city through a combination of marketing strategies, such
as advertising, public relations, and events.
WHAT IS CITY
BRANDING
City branding can involve a variety of elements, such as a city's history,
culture, natural beauty, architecture, and people. A successful city brand
should accurately reflect these unique characteristics, while also being
easily recognizable and memorable to potential visitors and investors.

One of the key benefits of city branding is its potential to attract tourists
and boost local economic growth. By creating a positive and memorable
image for a city, it can become a more attractive destination for
travelers, which can in turn create new jobs and generate revenue for
local businesses (Mihalis, 2017).
WHAT IS CITY
BRANDING

However, city branding can also be a complex and challenging process,

requiring a careful balance of different factors. For example, a city brand
that is too focused on luxury and exclusivity may fail to attract a diverse
range of visitors, while a brand that is too focused on cultural heritage
may not appeal to younger or more adventurous travelers (Zenker &
Braun, 2010).
HISTORY OF BEDFORD
Bedfordview is a suburb located in the east of Johannesburg, South
Africa. The area was originally named Bedford Farm, which was owned by
a wealthy businessman named Sir George Herbert Farrar. In the early
1900s, Farrar began to sell off sections of his land to developers, and by
the 1920s, the suburb had begun to take shape (Johannesburg City Parks
and Zoo, n.d.).

During the apartheid era, Bedfordview was designated as a "white"

suburb, and black people were not allowed to live there. However, in the
1990s, after the end of apartheid, the suburb became more diverse (Cape
Argus, 2018).

Today, Bedfordview is a thriving suburb with a mix of residential and

commercial areas. It is known for its upmarket shopping centers,
restaurants, and golf courses (South African History Online, n.d.).

STAKEHOLDER
INTERVIEW
A stakeholder interview is a qualitative research method used
to gather insights and perspectives from individuals who have
a vested interest in a particular project or initiative. These
stakeholders can include individuals, groups, or organizations
that may be impacted by the project or have a stake in its
success.

According to Creswell (2013), stakeholder interviews involve

"asking open-ended questions of stakeholders to obtain their
perspectives on a situation or issue" (p. 189). The purpose of
these interviews is to gather in-depth information and insights
from stakeholders that may not be captured through other
forms of data collection.
STAKEHOLDER
INTERVIEW
Stakeholder interviews can be conducted in a variety of ways,
including in-person or over the phone, and can be structured
or unstructured depending on the research objectives. The key
is to create a comfortable environment for the interviewee to
share their thoughts and opinions openly and honestly.
Stakeholder interviews can be a valuable tool for
understanding the needs and perspectives of those impacted
by a project or initiative, and can help inform decision-making
and strategy development.

STAKE HOLDER
INTERVIEW Q&A
Interviewer: Hi there, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Could you tell me a bit about yourself and your connection to
Bedfordview?
Interviewee: Of course. I've been living in Bedfordview for about five years now. I moved here with my family because we were looking for
a safe and family-friendly neighborhood with good schools.
Interviewer: That's great to hear. What do you think are some of the strengths of Bedfordview as a community?
Interviewee: Well, one of the things I really appreciate is the sense of community here. There are always events and activities going on,
and it feels like people really care about each other. I also think there are some great schools and parks in the area.
Interviewer: What are some of the challenges you see facing the Bedfordview community?
Interviewee: I think one of the challenges is traffic. It can be really congested, especially during rush hour. I also think there could be
more options for shopping and dining. There are a few malls in the area, but it would be great to see more independent businesses and
restaurants.
Interviewer: How do you think the community could work together to address some of these challenges?
Interviewee: I think it's important for residents to be involved and engaged in the community. Attending local events and joining
community groups can be a great way to stay informed and connected. I also think it's important to support local businesses and
advocate for improvements to infrastructure, like roads and public transport.
Interviewer: Finally, what do you see as the future of Bedfordview? How do you hope to see the community develop and grow in the
years to come?
Interviewee: I think there's a lot of potential for Bedfordview to continue to grow and evolve as a community. I would love to see more
options for cultural and entertainment activities, like live music and theater. It would also be great to see more green spaces and bike
lanes to encourage sustainable transportation. Overall, I think Bedfordview has a lot of great things going for it, and I'm excited to see
where the community goes in the future.

typography to convey the brand message. The
font choice and layout of the letters can be used
to create a unique and memorable logo.

EMBLEMS

oval-shaped and contain typography and imagery
inside. They can be used to create a classic and

TYPOGRAPHY

Typography is more than just choosing fonts; it involves careful

consideration of various typographic elements, including
typefaces, font sizes, spacing, line lengths, and hierarchy.
These elements collectively contribute to the visual appeal,
readability, and overall impact of a design.
TYPOGRAPHY
1. Communication: Typography is a powerful communication tool. Different typefaces can evoke
specific emotions, moods, or convey certain associations. Typeface selection can help reinforce
a brand's identity, convey a specific tone or message, and create a visual hierarchy within a
design (Lupton, 2010).
2. Readability: Clear and legible typography is essential for effective communication. Proper font
choice, appropriate font sizes, and suitable line spacing ensure that the text is easily readable
across different mediums and sizes (Lupton, 2010).
3. Visual Hierarchy: Typography helps establish a visual hierarchy by varying font sizes, weights, and
styles. This guides the viewer's attention, highlights important information, and creates a
structured flow within a design (Landa, 2010).
4. Branding and Identity: Typography plays a crucial role in establishing and reinforcing a brand's
identity. Consistent use of specific typefaces across various brand materials, such as logos,
websites, and marketing collateral, helps create a recognizable and cohesive brand image (Landa,
2010).
5. Aesthetics and Emotional Impact: The design and arrangement of typefaces contribute to the
overall aesthetic appeal and emotional impact of a design. The right typography can evoke
emotions, set a mood, or create a specific visual style (Lupton, 2010).
