Hypothesis Testing
1. An economist believed that the weekly consumption of food purchased by families with 5 members
from two cities, Manila and Makati are different. A random sample of 8 families were chosen from each
city. The result are as follows
At 5% level, is the economist claim true? Assume the variance are equal.
H0: There are no significance difference between Manila and Makati in weekly consumption of food
purchased by families with 5 members.
Ha: There are significance difference between Manila and Makati in weekly consumption of food
purchased by families with 5 members.
Answer: Based on the computation, I therefore conclude that the null hypothesis is failed to reject because
the p-value which is 0.595 is greater than the significance level. So, there are significant difference
between Manila and Makati in weekly consumption of food purchased by families with 5 members.
2. A dose of the drug Captrofil, designed to lower systolic blood pressure (SBP), is administered to 10
randomly selected volunteers, with the following results. Test the effectiveness of the drug. Use 5% level.
Answer: Based on the computation, I therefore conclude that the null hypothesis is rejected because the
p-value which is 0.008 is less than the significance level. So, there are no significance effect between 10
randomly selected volunteers administered to take a dose of the drug Captrofil that is designed to lower
systolic blood pressure (SBP).
