Probing depth > 5.5 mm (black band entirely within the pocket,
indicating pocket of 6 mm or more).

BPE 4 Required more complex treatment, referral to a specialist may


be indicated.

Probing depth 3.5-5.5 (black band partially visible, indicating


pockets of 4-5mm
BPE 3
Required root surface debridement (RSD)
No pockets > 3.5 mm, but supra-or subgingival
calculus/overhangs (black band completely visible). Overhangs is
an excess of restorative material that extends beyond the cavity
margin.
BPE 2
Removal of plaque retentive factors required, including supra
and sub gingival calculus.

No pockets >3.5 mm, no calculus/overhangs, no bleeding after


probing (black band completely visible).

No need for periodontal treatment
