SUPPLEMENTARY OUTCOME

APPENDIX R

Describe the post-operative advice you would give to a patient after a simple extraction
procedure
The following instructions must be respected/followed to promote healing.

 Keep gauzes in the mouth for an hour or two by maintaining a firm pressure and replace
them every half-hour, as needed.
 If you are bleeding, bite into a gauze
 Blood-tinged saliva is a normal postoperative effect.
 avoid strenuous activity and exercise for a few days
 Do not rinse your mouth or spit.
 Do not dislodge the blood clot that has formed in the tooth socket because it helps to
heal.
 Avoid brushing your teeth near the extraction site for the first 72 hours.

Pain

 use painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (always read and follow the

manufacturer's dosage instructions)

Diet

 for 24 hours, avoid rinsing, spitting, hot drinks or anything else that may dislodge the
blood clots that form in the empty tooth socket (they help the healing process)
 Avoid drinking through a straw.
 eat soft or liquid food for a few days and chew with your other teeth
 Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for 24 hours
 From the next day and until complete healing

 Rinse your mouth three times a day with warm water and salt (2 ml or 1/2 tsp of salt in
250 ml or 1 cup of water) gently rinse the extraction site with antiseptic mouthwash after
24 hours, and repeat this regularly over the next few days, particularly after eating – you
can also use warm water with a teaspoon of salt as mouthwash to reduce gum soreness
and inflammation.
 Call to surgery if after three days the pain increases instead of decreasing
 After a few days, you will feel better and be able to resume your normal activities. If you
are bleeding heavily, feeling pain, and experiencing swelling for two or three days or if you
are having a reaction to the medication, call for your surgery.
