2. List 2 signs of a healthy gingiva


a) ‘salmon’ pink colour, stippled gingiva that firmly attached to underlying alveolar bone,
b) The shape of a healthy gum usually looks pyramidal or knife-edged/sharp margin.
3. What is plaque?
Is a sticky, pale yellow deposit/biofilm of microorganisms and/or collection of bacteria that forms
on teeth surface.
4. List 2 signs of inflammation
a) Redness and swelling (inflammation) of gums
b) Plaque bacteria builds up on and around teeth causing inflammation and soreness of
teeth
5. What is a ‘true’ pocket?
Periodontal pocket or ‘True’ pocket is the unnatural space which appears around the gingival
margin of a tooth suffering from periodontal disease. The gingival fibres that attach to the tooth
will be irreversibly destroyed by calculus. True pockets will only be present in patients with
periodontitis.
6. List 2 signs of chronic periodontitis
a) Supra &sub gingival calculus
b) Gingival recession, bone loss, tooth mobility
