- In the 1980’s the evolution of hip-hop started
-Moves become institutional (pop, locking and breaking)
HIP-HOP BASIC DANCE MOVES
POPPING
-created in Fresno, CA
- Made famous by Sam Solomon “Boogaloo Sam” and his crew the Electric Boogaloos
(Electric Boogie is a style of funk and hip-hop dance)
Popping is a jerking movement by quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to the rhythm or beats of the music.
Liquid Popping are movements that are smooth to look like fluid.
Strobbing is a quick, stiff movements with quick pauses in between each movement.
These dance styles include the robot, waving and tutting.
LOCKING
-created in 1969 in Los Angeles, CA
- made popular by Dan Campbell and his dance crew the Lockers
Locking is usually when a dancer holds his position for a few seconds.
Locking can often be used for comic relief too.

BREAKING or B-Boying
-created in South Bronx, NY
-First Hip Hop dance style
-African Americans created it but Puerto Ricans made it popular, their style of dance is known as uprock.
Breaking is usually unstructured and performed at different levels.
Toprock- dancing while on your feet.
Downrock- dancing on the foot.
Power Moves- spin on the ground or acrobatics
Freeze/Freezing- when a dancer pose.
KRUMPING
-is a street dance popularized in the United States, characterized by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic
movement. The youths who started krumping saw the dance as a way for them to escape gang life and "to release anger,
aggression and frustration positively, in a non-violent way.“ Krumping is very aggressive and is danced upright to upbeat
and fast-paced music.
-There are four primary moves in krump: jabs, arm swings, chest pops, and stomps.

BOOGALOO
-is a very loose movement, mostly using the hips and legs. Boogaloo seems to give the illusion that the dancer has no
bones. This style is closely related to popping, with dancers involved in rolling the hips, knees, legs, and head.
