Background Results
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common among
critically ill patients with COVID-19 (CoV-AKI).
Our study was conducted in the month of
March of 2020,it is one of the first reports of
CoV-AKI in USA and the first one in a
predominantly African American population.
until now it remains unclear if AKI is largely due
to hemodynamic changes and cytokine release
or if the virus also leads to direct
cytotoxicity.We report the phenotype and
outcomes of AKI at an academic hospital in
New Orleans.

Methods

cases with diagnosis of COVID-19 ( based on

SARS-CoV-S RNA ) and AKI diagnosed on admission or
during the first 10 days of hospitalization were included

AKI was defined according to KDIGO criteria.

Exclusion criteria were end-stage kidney disease and
kidney transplantation
Summary and Conclusions
The mortality rate, the need for RRT and ICU care were high in
By manual review of every chart we identified the factors CoV-AKI. from all etiologies of AKI , hemodynamic instability is the
involved in the development of AKI :
1) those predisposing to ischemic acute tubular injury (ATI) dominant driver that likely leads to ischemic ATI as the most
2) those predisposing to toxic ATI common cause on AKI in this setting.
3) clinical elements suggestive of other cause of AKI
