The Implementation of Numeration that I Have Ever Done

My name is Fitri Yanti with the nickname is Apit. I was born in Palembang, April 15 th
1995. Currently this year is my 4th year as a teacher in Junior High School No. 12 in Batam,
Riau Island, Indonesia. From that mean time, I have been teaching in the grades 7 th – 9th
specially in Science. Since I was graduated as a physics education student, I also teach physics
olympiad for several prodigies in my school.
I was graduated in one of private famous universities that’s known for developing
students with high potential in teaching advanced Science especially physics and mathematics.
Thus, people in my school expects much from me to bring some change in education’s system.
From here, I learn to be a good teacher by understanding that physics and mathematics can’t
be separated with the topic of numeration. As we know, students especially in Indonesia are
not common with numeration. Our past education system has taught us to be a calculating
machine. Students were determined to remember all the complex formulas without understand
the meaning behind those. A long term consequence caused by that system is our students
hardly compete in work field since they can’t applicate what they have learned in school with
the real facts in field. That’s why the implementation of numeration teaching for students in
school holds a crucial role in reinforcing their knowledge in mathematics and physics. If
students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to applicate basic mathematical
operations, it will be very helpful for them in every aspects of life.
I have done several implementations of numeration in my own classes. For example
when the students need to learn about linear motion, which means they have to learn about
distance and displacement first, I show them some maps that I took from google maps, about a
route of an airplane when it has to go to some countries. Students have to find the shortest and
most effective way for that airplane to reach its destination. From there, students can conclude
differences between distance and displacement by themselves. Another example of numeration
implementation I have ever done is when I have to teach about Archimedes’ Law. After giving
them the story behind Archimedes’ Law, I ask the students to find the amount of people can fit
in a ship or boat to make the ship or boat not drowning. And there are still many more of
implementations of numeration that I always mention in every classes to enrich my students’
knowledge in that subject.
To ensure effective implementation of numeration in teaching, I must employ a range
of exercises, the use of technologies, and teaching techniques including hands-on activities. I
also require a comprehensive approach that takes into account the specific needs of my students
and an effective teaching methodologies. I’m still far from being a perfect educator/teacher,
therefore I want to enrich my own knowledge about numeration to create more high
qualification students. Thus, I hope I can bring a change, even though a small change, to
escalate our human resource to become a high qualification people.
