I. OBJECTIVES
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the particle nature of matter as basis for
A. Content Standards
explaining properties, physical change and structure of substances and mixtures
The learners shall be able to present how water behaves in its different states within the
B. Performance Standards
water cycle
The learners shall be able to explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases based on the
particle nature of matter

1. Using a clean and dry graduated cylinder, pour sugar until the 20mL mark of the
graduated cylinder.
2. Transfer the measured sugar into a 250mL beaker or a transparent bottle.
3. Measure 50mL of distilled or clean tap water using graduated cylinder.
4. Add 50mL water to the sugar and mix thoroughly until all the sugar dissolves.
(CAUTION: Do not taste anything in the laboratory unless specifically told to do so
by your teacher.)
5. Transfer the sugar mixture into a graduated cylinder.
6. Pour one cup of tap water into a transparent glass bottle.
7. Add one some drop of food coloring slowly along the side of the transparent bottle.
8. Set aside the bottle with food coloring in a locker or corner of our room without
disturbing the setup. Describe the appearance when you left the bottle the previous
day.
Guide Questions:
1. What is the taste of the resulting mixture?
2. Think about sugar and water as made up of tiny particles. With your groupmates,
discuss and give your reason/s for the observations you made in Q1. You may draw
illustrations to further explain your reason/s.
3. What is the volume of the sugar and water mixture?
4. Is the volume of the resulting sugar mixture equal, more than or less than the sum
(20mL + 50mL water) of the volumes of the unmixed sugar and water?
5. What happens to the food coloring dropped in the bottle containing water? Write all
your observations in your activity paper.
6. Think about food coloring and water as made up of tiny particles. With your
groupmates, discuss and give your reason/s for the observations you made in Q1.
You may draw illustrations to further explain your reason/s.
E. Discussing new concepts
and practicing new skills --------

Relate the picture shown to the Particle Nature of Matter
G. Finding practical
applications of concepts
and skills in daily living
(ELABORATE)
2. Why do you think the volume of the mixture of coffee and water is less
than the sum of the volumes of unmixed coffee and water?
a. The water is made of tiny particles with no spaces between them.
b. Coffee is made up of molecules bigger than the molecules of
Water.
c. The water molecules could not fit in the spaces between coffee
molecules.
d. The coffee molecules combined with the water molecules.
3. In the mixture of sugar and water, sugar is still present though you cannot
see sugar anymore. Why is this so?
a. The water is made of tiny particles with little spaces between them.
b. Sugar is made up of molecules smaller than the molecules of water
c. The water molecules could fit in the spaces between sugar
molecules or vice versa
d. The sugar molecules combined with the water molecules.
