Teachers’ Intervention on Students Dealing with Poor Internet Connection

An Action Research Proposal

Jealous M. Telan

I. Context and Rationale

This pandemic has caused widespread disruption in educational systems,

affecting over 1.5 billion students. It has compelled the government to temporarily close

the school, discontinue face-to-face instruction, and strictly enforce physical distance.

Schools implemented relevant technologies, developed learning and staff resources,

established systems and infrastructure, implemented new teaching protocols, and

revised curricula. However, some students found the transition to be smooth, while

others found it difficult, particularly those students that are less fortunate to have an

internet connection at home.

There are approximately 5 million households with school-age children that do

not have access to broadband internet. As a result, millions of students are falling

behind. There are numerous ways that a student's academic performance can be

negatively affected by a lack of internet or poor internet connection access. Students

who do not have or have a poor internet connection cannot connect with leaders or

classmates, conduct independent research, or get online homework help. They will also

be unable to participate in their scheduled virtual classes.

1
II. Action Research Question

This study aims to know the effects of poor internet connection among Grade 9

students in their academic performance. Furthermore, this study attempts to provide

answers to the following problems:

1. Who among the students dealing with poor internet connection?

2. How poor internet connection does affect the academic performance of the

Grade 9 students?

3. How were you going to solve the problems affecting the student’s academic

performance?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention Strategy

Slow Internet connections or limited access from remote areas can cause

students to fall behind academically. It was assumed that not having personal internet

access is one of the reasons why some students perform worse in school than students

who have their own internet access at home.

A poor internet connection can affect a student's academic performance in a

variety of ways. Students who do not have internet access are unable to join and

connect with teachers and classmates.

As I conducted virtual discussions to my students, I discovered that most Grade

9 students were not attending virtual classes due to a poor internet connection. Based

from that observation, the intervention that I’m going to do to the other students who

2
cannot join my classes is that I would sent the power point presentation of my lesson in

our Group chat and then, I would create a separated file for their activities that they can

open any time.

IV. Action Research Method

a. Participants/Other sources of Data

The study will be conducted to the Grade 9 students of Santiago City National

High School at Calaocan, Santiago City who voluntarily participated.

b. Data Gathering Methods

The researcher will use Google Forms to track how poor internet connections

affect students' online learning.

Information will be gathered in the fourth week of March 2022 to determine how a

poor internet connection affects online learning, and in the fourth week of April 2022 to

assess how they will solve the problem affecting their academic performance. The

study's implementation will begin in the fourth week of March 2022 and will last until the

first week of May 2022. The statistical method will be used to record, tabulate, and

analyze the results.

c. Data Analysis Plan

The google form corresponding to the question that the student will answer will

be sent on their group chat (Messenger) to test how a poor internet connection affects

their academic performance. Using the statistical method, we will analyze the learners'

3
responses, which could be moderate, difficult, or very difficult depending on how they

answer the given questions.
