Introductory Message
Welcome to TLE 9 – ICT (Contact Center Services)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Antique and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 9- ICT (Contact Center Services) Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 9- ICT (Contact Center Services) Activity Sheet is developed to

help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

Organizing and Manipulating Files
(Identifying Files in Directory/Folder According to Type and Usage)

I. Learning Competency
Organize and manipulate files; Identify files in a directory/folder according to
types and usage. (TLE_ICTCC9- 12CO-IIIa-b-3)

II. Background Information for Learners

These Activity Sheets are designed to familiarize students how to identify files
in directory/folder according to type and usage.

Imagine a cluttered tool cabinet. Can you easily find an object in a disorganize
place? For sure, you will waste time searching. The principle is also true for a
customer service representative who is wasting time before attending to a
client. For this reason, you are required to organize record to serve clients
efficiently. But, before you operate a computer and appreciate the skills of
managing files, the following basic concept will be of big help.

File is a collection of data into a permanent storage structure. They are stored
on a permanent storage media such as a computer hard drive, CD ROM drive,
floppy disk drive or sometimes even a tape drive.

Filenames
When I saved the word processor file containing my list of my collections, I had
to assign a filename, My Collections. You cannot save any files on your system
unless they have a valid filename. Valid filenames vary depending on the
operating system you are running on your computer, and here is a rundown of
what you need to remember to assign filenames.
 You can have long filenames – up to 255 characters long.
 Numbers are allowed
 You can have a mixture of upper and lowercase letters
 Spaces are allowed, which make the whole filename a lot more
readable
 The characters / \ ; : * ? “ < > | are not allowed in filenames
 Filenames must be unique in each directory or folder – no duplication
Example filename: My Collections.dochhh

File Extension
There are numerous files in a computer storage or hard disk. Each file has
different icon and file type. Question: how does the operating system know
what the files are? The answer lies with the file extension.
File extension is hidden for security purposes – by accidentally deleting or
changing the extension that may damage the file.

Let us try to view the file extension of a word processor file:

1. Point your mouse to a file, then right click.

2. Choose properties, a dialogue box will appear.
3. In the general tab, you will see the type of file.

Recognize the part after the dot or a period in figure 1. That is called the file
extension and serves an important purpose – to identify the file type. File type
is the application that was used to create the file or the format of the file. This
tells the operating system what program to use to open it. Now, whenever you
click on a filename with the .doc file extension, the Word application runs and
opens the file.

Types of File
There are a lot more files in your computer than just a document file with .doc
extension. Here are some examples of Common file types.
Extension Description
.exe application, programs or executable files
.html, .mht Internet pages file extension
.bmp, .gif, .jpg graphic file format
.wav, .mp3, .wma audio files

5
Folders / Directories
Folder is a container used to store and organize files. Folders are created and
stored in a disk or some other type of storage media. Files and folders are
represented by text names and icon.
