Perhaps the most common way of doing science is through

hypothesis-driven research. This approach begins similarly to
descriptive research, where careful observations of nature are
made and recorded. The researcher then asks a question about

one or more explanations for the question, or hypotheses are

proposed by the researcher. Ideally, these hypotheses will
provide predictions that can be tested by experiments or further
observation of nature. The results of these tests or observations
can either support or contradict the hypothesis. At this point, the
experimenter may go back and modify the hypothesis, test it
further, or reject it and test a new one.
Example:
Observation
Question
Hypothesis
Prediction It should work when I recharge it.
Test Prediction Recharge it.
Result It does not work after charging. The hypothesis is
not supported.
Exercises:
1. What is another hypothesis that may explain the cell phone question? (1 sentence
max)
2. Arrange the following statements in the correct order in the boxes of your chart by
putting one letter in each box.

A) This room is hot! D) Turn the AC on.

B) The room cools down. E) It should cool down when we turn the A.C. on.
F) Why is it hot?
