Agriculture.pdf

a. Crop Science- Deals with economic plants .e.g., rice, jute, potato etc.
b. Animal husbandry- Deals with animal production, e.g., cattle, buffalo, goat,
poultry etc.
c. Veterinary -Deals with the diseases and treatments of animal.
d. Fisheries- Deals with pisciculture (rearing and managing fishes).
e. Agricultural engineering- Deals with farm mechanization.
f. Agricultural economics- Deals with economic management and marketing of
agricultural products.
g. Agro-forestry- Deals with integrated crop and forest plants production.
h. Agricultural engineering- Deals with farm mechanization.

3. Define the six major areas in Agriculture

a. Crop science – also known as agronomy. Is a discipline of agricultural science that

studies plants and their cultivation for food, fiber, fuel, and other agricultural goods.
Plant genetics, physiology, soil management, pest control, and crop enhancement
techniques are all used to increase agricultural yield, quality, and sustainability.

b. Soil Science – Is the scientific study of soil as a natural resource. It includes the study of
soil composition, characteristics, formation, categorization, and the interactions
between soil, plants, and the environment. It examines soil fertility, structure, and
health with the goal of improving agricultural operations, land use, and environmental
sustainability.

c. Animal Science – is a branch of science concerned with the biology, genetics, nutrition,
management, and behavior of animals, notably those used in agriculture and food
production. It discusses animal productivity, health, welfare, and the connections
between animals and their surroundings. Animal scientists use research, breeding, and
management strategies to improve the production, efficiency, and well-being of cattle
and other animals.

d. Crop Protection – refers to the collection of tactics, procedures, and technologies used
to protect crops against pests, diseases, weeds, and other conditions that might harm
their development and production. It entails a variety of measures, including as
biological, chemical, and cultural approaches, to control and reduce possible hazards to
agricultural crops while reducing environmental effect and assuring long-term
productivity.
e. Agriculture Economic and Marketing – is a subfield of economics that examines
agricultural production, distribution, consumption, and trade using economic concepts.
It entails researching how factors including as supply, demand, pricing, and government
regulations affect agricultural markets and the agricultural industry as a whole. This
discipline also investigates various agricultural marketing techniques, value chains, and
financial elements in order to maximize efficiency and assure economic sustainability for
farmers and stakeholders.

f. Agricultural Extension & Communication - is the activity of disseminating agricultural

knowledge, information, and best practices to farmers, rural communities, and other
stakeholders. It strives to bridge the research-to-practice gap by providing farmers with
applicable techniques, technology, and information to improve agricultural production,
sustainability, and livelihoods. Communication is critical in effectively communicating
these insights through various channels such as workshops, demonstrations, print
materials, digital platforms, and interactive discussions, fostering two-way
communication for knowledge exchange and continuous improvement in agricultural
practices.
