EVB 3052 Structural Dynamics Sample Problem III-

III-1

A vibrating machine weighing 5 kN is bolted at the middle of two parallel steel

beams, as shown in the figure. If the span of the beam(s) is 3 m, and the rectangular
steel beam section is 30 mm wide and 180 mm deep. The machine is vibrating @
480 rpm and produces an unbalanced force of 500 N at this speed. Neglect the
weight of beam and the damping ratio of the system is 1.5%. Determine the
amplitude of steady state deflection and acceleration at the mid point beam due to
the unbalanced force produces by the machine?

Solution

Given:
1. W = 5 kN mass, m = (5000)/(9.81*1000) = 0.51 N-sec2/mm
2. Moment of Insertia, I = [30*1803]/12 = 1.458x107 mm4
3. Modulus of Elasticity, E = 200,000 N/mm2
4. P0 = 500 N
 480 
5. forcing frequency, ω = 2πf = 2π  = 16π rad
