“Rethink and look for sustainable alternatives.”
If the life span of every product is perceived as a continuous cycle,
appropriate decisions in the interests of maximising sustainability already
have to be made when selecting the raw and input materials for every step
in the production and finishing chain. HERMA’s innovative adhesive materials
give your production team this option right from the start. It’s therefore
likely that you can adopt a new approach much more often than you think,
and prompt a positive change in favour of the three R’s – recycle, reduce,
renew – with your own products.

Recycled materials

Growing demand for recovered paper

We are stepping up the use of recycled paper and rapidly expanding our range. Among the focal
points are coated papers, which are especially attractive in view of their broad application scope
and the increasing demand being generated by label users. HERMAcoat

PE film label manufactured entirely from recycled material

Produced exclusively from recycled polyethylene, the HERMA label material rPE is thought to
be the first of its kind intended for use in the manufacture of PE film labels. It responds well to
coating during production and offers very good printability no matter what the technique, from
flexo and offset to screen and digital printing.

This solution therefore perfectly brings together sustainability and superior product characte-
ristics. And with the completely new HERMA rPP self-adhesive material, we are following through
in the booming recycled film segment.

Wash-off adhesive promotes recycling

Successively transforming used drinks bottles into new ones is no longer a vision, but has long
since become a reality.

Used with PET bottles, as well as PET, PE and PP packaging, the special wash-off label adhesive
62Rpw enables recycling operators to produce high-purity pellets that do not contain any
detrimental residues – no remains of paper or film labels, and no residual adhesive.

Wash-off adhesive for return logistics

In logistics processes, typically in the production and distribution of food and plants, profitability
depends on efficient internal material flows and flawless goods transportation and delivery. It is
therefore essential that the ubiquitous load carriers – trays, crates, stacking boxes and the like
– can be relabelled many times over.

Labels coated with the wash-off adhesive 62P, which can be removed without leaving any
residues, are key to both this type of re-use and the recycling of single-use containers.

Compostable label stock

In cases where waste cannot be avoided, it should at least be recyclable or suitable for
composting – as exemplified by the label stock consisting of the material HERMAextracoat

First ever practical solution for shipping labels
Among all the known linerless labelling concepts, the HERMA InNo-Liner system is regarded
as the first practicable solution of its kind. It peerlessly satisfies the picking pace and other
requirements imposed by logistics and distribution centres. On top of that, the label stock is
compatible with multi-colour preprinting.

The cost is much the same as that of a conventional self-adhesive label, and affordability is
enhanced by eliminating the considerable expense of disposing of liner.

Optimising consumption, reducing costs

Doing business in a sustainable way always entails optimising the consumption of resources.
By way of its lighter Thin Range label stock, consisting of thinner label papers and specially
adapted adhesives, HERMA is enabling label printers to save costs, space and resources.

Especially lightweight and supple, these materials ensure durable and reliable labelling on
diverse surfaces, as well as outstanding printability.

From field to paper
A paper that is probably the kindest to the environment worldwide is produced largely from
grass or, stated more accurately, from sun-dried hay. Processing these fibres to produce paper
for use in the new label material HERMAnature fieno more effectively preserves resources and
generates less CO2 than production operations using virgin fibre or even recycled pulp.

Paper produced from grass is already widely used for diverse types of food packaging, for
example, and is especially popular with companies that champion sustainable packaging.

HERMA food-safe adhesives

In the food industry, labels are applied either to the packaging
(indirect food contact) or directly to the produce, e.g. to meat,
cheese or fruit (direct food contact).

In order to prevent undesirable constituents penetrating the

food, adhesives and label materials are tested according to the
requirements of official bodies, such as the BfR (German Federal
Institute for Risk Assessment) or the FDA (US Food and Drug
Administration). HERMA supplies numerous food-safe products
with adhesives that have been certified by the German institute
ISEGA.

InNo-Liner

Instant rewards
Thanks to its universal knowledge base, HERMA offers an end-to-end solution
from the outset – linerless label stock alongside an innovative labeling system.
Users instantly benefit from the peace of mind afforded by integrated performance,
while label manufacturers are presented with new selling points for marketing their
compelling solutions.

Far-reaching effect
Around the world, labeling is an activity which at present generates
millions of tons of liner that is completely useless once the labels have
been applied.

Avoiding this residual material altogether also entirely eliminates

the currently essential and expensive disposal and recycling operations.

Leading edge
The all-new HERMA InNo-Liner system is the product of a pioneering
performance by the company and its long-established leading edge
in the production of self-adhesive materials based on multi-layer
technology. This advanced applied science demands the simultaneous
application of two adhesive layers. The outer layer remains inactive until
the label is dispensed.

Semi-permanent
adhesives

Fields of application – semi-permanent

(reclosure) adhesive
The selection of the right pressure-sensitive adhesive for a re-closable seal always depends on the surface the adhesive is to be
used on and its condition. A differentiation is made between three categories:

Re-closeable on seals with restoring

force
this category, labels are applied to flexible
In
packaging that is generally rolled or folded after the
initial opening. The packaging adjusts to the volume
of the material in the container. A classic example
is muesli packaging. The rolled or folded opening is
provided with a re-sealable label.

The packaging generates an enormous restoring

force that must be counter-acted by the label, and in
particular by the pressure-sensitive adhesive. At the
same time, the pressure-sensitive adhesive should
always be easy to remove from the packaging without
residue. When it is sealed again, it must retain its
adhesive properties.

Re-closable seal on packaging

without restoring force
A typical application area is the re-sealable label
for paper tissue packaging. If the packaging has
no restoring force, then soft peeling in particular is
decisive.

The label should be easy to remove, without any

residue or noise. If the adhesion is too high, residue
will remain or the packaging will be damaged. If the
adhesion is too low, then the label will simply drop off
the packaging.

82
Semi-permanent
adhesives

Re-closable seal despite effect of

moisture, ethereal oils or alcohol
Packaging for wet wipes are very critical. After the
first opening, the area of the re-closable seal of the
packaging is covered with moisture, ethereal oils or
alcohol due to the wet wipes being pulled out, and yet
the pressure-sensitive adhesive must still maintain
the required adhesive properties.

The pressure-sensitive adhesive may also not cloud

over with a white hue. The soft peeling is a must here
as well. The label should be easy to remove, without
any residue or noise. The adhesive property may not
change, even if the packaging is opened multiple
times.

Additional criteria are also taken into account.

More detail can be found in the table.

Compostable label stock

In cases where waste cannot be avoided, it should at least be recyclable or suitable for composting – as exemplified by the label
stock consisting of the material HERMAextracoat (grade 242) or HERMAtherm Bio (grade 908) and the special adhesive 62N.

It satisfies the benchmark for industrial compostability and, following certification according to EN 13432, is allowed to bear the seedling logo.
This paves the way for fully biodegradable packaging, including the applied labels, without any impairment of labelling efficiency.

Wash-off adhesive for return logistics

In logistics processes, typically in the production and distribution of food and plants, profitability depends on efficient internal
material flows and flawless goods transportation and delivery. It is therefore essential that the ubiquitous load carriers – trays,
crates, stacking boxes and the like – can be relabelled many times over.

Labels coated with the wash-off adhesive 62P, which can be removed without leaving any residues, are key to both this type of re-use and the
recycling of single-use containers.

If a label material needs to be completely opaque, then the label converter will usually have to make compromises: Generally
the selection of coloured label materials is very small or one has to use material with coloured adhesive. However, due to the
carbon particles, their properties tend to be different from conventional adhesive – and they are certainly not suitable for direct
contact with foodstuff. But now these compromises are a thing of the past.

With HERMA‘s innovative multi-layer technology,

most label materials can now be provided very flexibly in opaque

Adheres under extreme conditions.
A world premiere in the field of low-migration adhesives: HERMA introduces a completely resin-free adhesive for labels that require
extremely strong initial tack.

On the road towards zero migration Extremely high tack (initial adhesion)

Since migration is mainly determined by the adhesive’s resin content, With high-speed labelling (including blow-on labelling) and labelling
the new HERMAsuperTack (63Vst) offers especially low migration on difficult surfaces, extremely good tack is necessary in order

adhesive specifically for this purpose.
It features correction factor 2 and therefore has approval for dry,
moist and fatty foods. The 63Vst is therefore ideally suited for labels Its excellent initial tack makes it ideal for problem-solving when it

without resins without compromising on the tack.
Thanks to its temperature resistance it can also be used for
foodstuffs that have been recently heated, such as boiled chicken.
In such cases, there is usually a great amount of heat and moisture
beneath the packaging film. The adhesive’s excellent tack also
makes it perfect for three-dimensional, irregularly shaped surfaces,
ranging from shrink-wrapped raw ham to pre-packaged poultry cuts .

Despite its outstanding tack, the 63Vst can be processed as easily as

conventional dispersion adhesives.

HERMAperfectStick (63Mps)
Migration-safe adhesive for pharmaceutical labels
Small-diameter glass and plastic containers present special challenges when it comes to labelling. In the case of plastic containers,
it is also possible for plasticizers and similar substances to migrate into the label and impair the function of the adhesive.

Excellent for wrap-around labelling < 15 mm

The adhesive HERMAperfectStick (63Mps) was developed specifically

for such applications. When used with thin label materials, it is
especially well suited for diameters less than 15 mm and adheres
strongly to non-polar surfaces (which have very low surface tension).

Continuous improvements in the productivity of labelling systems

are placing greater and greater demands on labels. Labels are
applied by means of high-speed machinery and in some cases must
adhere to cool surfaces.

HERMAperfectStick (63Mps) is easy to process and dispense.

It retains its high adhesion even at low temperatures.

The critical factor is perfect interplay between the adhesive and the
label material.

For this purpose HERMAperfectStick (63Mps) was paired with

materials that are flexible, thin and adaptable. Thus we can provide
the perfect adhesive material for every application.

Important facts:
Diameters less than 15 mm are considered critical.

63Mps has excellent adhesive properties but is still very easy to

process and dispense.

Thanks to its extremely low adhesive tolerances of ± 1.5 g/m² it

provides reliable and secure adhesion.

Plastic is regarded as critical owing to its non-polar surface.

Moreover, plasticizers and similar substances can migrate into
the adhesive.

Long-term labelling
For long-term labels used for product labelling, it is not just the
longevity of the label material that is decisive, but also the permanent
final adhesion of the pressure-sensitive adhesive. There is almost no
end to the variety of substrates to which labels need to be attached.
The most common applications on typical substrates are tested in the

Security labelling

The HERMAsuperPerm (63S) pressure-sensitive adhesive opens up all

kinds of ways to provide medicinal products and other packaging and
medical devices with a security label in a particularly economical way.

Such a tamper-evident feature is prescribed according to EU guideline

2016/161/EU for prescription medication.

HERMAsuperPerm (63S) is distinguished by its high final adhesion, so

that seal labels using this adhesive cannot be removed from folding
boxes with dispersion coating and many other polar and non-polar
surfaces such as paper, carton, but also plastic and steel without
being destroyed itself or leaving visible residue on the surface. This
function can be additionally strengthened by applying security Cost-effective solution
punches to the label. HERMAsuperPerm (63S) can make labour-intensive and
expensive special materials like self-destroying foils, holograms,
cellophane sleeves, VOID solutions or even entirely new folding
box constructions unnecessary.

Seawater-
resistant

Seawater-resistant self-adhesive materials acc. to BS5609

Labels used for the product labelling of transport containers containing hazardous goods must meet special requirements and
specifications according to the British Standard 5609.

BS5609 – Section 2
In order for these requirements to be met, the adhered and unprinted label has to be able to be stored in saline seawater for 3 months without
detaching from the substrate that it is adhered to. The interaction between the label material and the pressure-sensitive adhesive is crucial.
With the certified dispersion and UV-acrylic adhesives of HERMA, this challenge can be met with ease.

BS5609 – Section 3
Section 3 defines the test conditions that must be met with regard to legibility and abrasion resistance of the printed image under the influence
of sea water.

The objective of the seawater-resistant adhesive materials is the

minimisation of environmental damage and safety risks caused
by chemical containers that go overboard or are damaged while
at sea. If such a container is washed ashore, its BS5609-certified
label remains intact and provides important information about the
content.

Since June 2015, the GHS is setting new requirements regarding

the labelling of dangerous substances and mixtures. In addition,
the industry increasingly demands higher flexibility. Small batches
and unscheduled orders need to be handled with short notice and
without great logistical effort. Moreover, there are individual colour
requirements to design the brand presentation.

Digital print technologies like colour laser printing or aqueous inkjet printing with pigment ink offer
cost-effective alternatives with which the required labels can be printed “just in time” and in the exact
quantity required.

Herma offers two materials – HERMA PE Laser (800) and HERMA PP Inkjet (821) – that meet the strict
sea water resistance requirements according to BS5609 section 2 and section 3. More information can
be found on the next page.
