Ruthenium Charlotte

A Presentation by Rachel and

Properties
Ruthenium is such a
pretty metal!
Physical properties
- brittle and hard
- silvery whitish
- melting point: 2300-2450°C0
- boiling point: 3900-4150°C

chemical properties
- relatively unreactive
- does not dissolve in most acids
- does not react with oxygen at
room temperatures, only high
temperatures
Uses
- Catalysts for ammonia and acetic acid production
- fission products of uranium and plutonium in
nuclear reactors
- difficult to roll or draw into wires
- alloy for platinum and other metals of the platinum
group
- color ceramics and glass

rutheni
- sixth rarest metal in the
earth’s crust
- commonly found associated
with other platinum metals
- platinum deposits near the
Ural Mountains
- (sometimes in north and
south americas too)

- obtained by “froth the refining of
separating it from flotation” nickel or copper
platinum ores
metal

- melted in an
electric furnace - reacted with - ruthenium as
- matte 95% precious sulfuric acid and residue of the
metals oxygen process
