Measurement of Volume
INTRODUCTION
Volume is the amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional object expressed in cubic units
(cubic centimeter, cm3; milliliter, mL or Liter, L). It is also the capacity of a material to hold certain
substance or liquid. Thus, it is also the amount of a substance occupying certain volume.
This experiment is designed for students to measure the dimensions (length, width & height) of a
regularly shaped container to find its theoretical volume(TV), and compare this TV with the experimental
volume (EV), which is the actual volume of liquid that the container can hold.
Since the density of water is 1g/mL or 1g/cm3, 1mL = 1 cm3.

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Determine the volume of a container by measuring its dimensions, length, width and height

2. Compare the volume of the container with the volume of water it can contain

II. MATERIALS:
Regularly shaped box or container, water, ruler, graduated cylinder, medicine cup

III. PROCEDURES:
A. Volume of the Box
Measure the length, width and height of the box in centimeters for three different places. Put
marks on these places. Compute for their averages. Determine the theoretical volume (TV) of the box using
V = l x w x h.

B. Volume of Water/Capacity of the Box to Contain Water

Put water into the container carefully up to the brim. Measure the experimental volume (EV)
of the water the box can hold using graduated cylinder by pouring carefully its content without spilling any
amount. You may use medicine cup to measure excess water from the graduated cylinder.

IV. OBSERVATION/S
A. Data and Results
1. Volume of the Box/Container
TRIAL Length (cm) Width (cm) Height (cm) Volume (cm3) = TV
1 16.8cm 6.0cm 3.8cm 383.04cm3
2 16.8cm 6.0cm 2.8cm 282.24cm3
3 16.8cm 6.0cm 1.8cm 181.44cm3
AVERAGE 16.8cm 6.0cm 2.8cm 282.24cm3

2. The graduated cylinder reading of the capacity of the container follows:

Volume of the water/Capacity of the Box (EV) = ____277.5_____ mL

3. Difference of TV from EV = EV-TV = _____-4.74_____ mL or cm3

4. Compute for the percent error! 4.74/282.24 = 0.0167942176870*100 = 1.7%

B. Questions:
1. Compare the theoretical and experimental volumes of the box. – the experimental volume
of the container is slightly lesser than the theoretical one.

2. What can you say about the capacity or volume of the box? –
