“Tri thức và trí tuệ của con người đâu phải có sẵn. Không ai sinh ra trên đời đều giỏi ngay cả, mà
đó là quá trình dài của sự tích lũy, học hỏi từng chút mỗi ngày.”

SPEAKING
Idioms:
to have a falling out
“Margaret and her sister had a falling out a few years back. They hardly even speak to each other
now.”
to wear the pants
“My mother was very young when I was born, so it was my grandmother who wore the pants in my
house.”
born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth
“I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I had to work two jobs to put myself through college.”
Part 1:
1. Have you ever had a disagreement with a family member? How did you resolve it?
When I was young, I once had a conflict with my younger brother. If my memory serves me right, it
was because of our family's tight financial situation, my mother could only afford to buy us one comic
book. Because my brother and I both wanted to read it first, we ended up fighting and tearing the book
apart. My mother punished us by making us kneel for half an hour. In the end, thanks to that
punishment and my mother's advice, we made up and learned a lesson about sharing.
2. Should we rely heavily on our families or is it better to try to be independent?
I suppose it depends on our age. When we are young, especially under 18 years old, we need financial
support from our families to focus on our studies. However, when we win a place/position university
and start working, I reckon we should diminish our reliance on family financial support and learn how
to make independent decisions.
3. In what ways have families in your country changed in recent?
The roles of husbands and wives have witnessed much change in recent years. Both spouses have been
more open to perform different roles, such as seizing various job opportunities or being more involved
in the household. Another change, I believe, is the trend to have fewer children. Parents nowadays
think of having nuclear families due to high expense of living and career perspectives.
