Accomplishment:
The Science Capstone Project Defense took place on May 24, 2023, at the
STEM Laboratory. This event marked the culmination of the students' academic
journey, where they showcased their scientific research and findings. The participating
student-researchers were organized into 16 groups, comprising students from the STEM
and GAS Strand with electives in Biology.
Throughout the day, each group had the opportunity to present their research
findings and defend their Science Capstone Projects. The defense sessions were
conducted in a professional manner, allowing the student-researchers to demonstrate
their knowledge, analytical skills, and the scientific rigor applied to their projects.
The panelists, consisting of esteemed Science Teachers, played a crucial role in
evaluating the presentations. They actively engaged with the student-researchers, asking
probing questions to assess the depth and quality of their work. The panelists' diverse
expertise contributed to comprehensive feedback and constructive criticism,
encouraging the students to think critically and demonstrate their understanding of the
subject matter.
Conclusion:
The Science Capstone Project Defense successfully concluded at 4:30 PM,
marking the end of an intellectually stimulating and rewarding day for both the student-
researchers and the panelists. The event provided a platform for the students to
showcase their hard work, dedication, and passion for science, while the panelists'
valuable input enriched their research experience.
Recommendations:
The Science Capstone Defense is a highly recommended activity because it
offers numerous benefits and plays a crucial role in the academic and personal
development of student-researchers. Through their research projects, student-
researchers tackle real-world problems or explore scientific inquiries. This experience
allows them to develop critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills,
preparing them for challenges they may face in their future careers or further studies.
The Science Capstone Defense often involves group projects, encouraging teamwork
and collaboration. Students learn to work together, delegate responsibilities, and
communicate effectively, mirroring real-world scientific research settings. Defending
their research in front of a panel of experts enhances students' presentation and
communication skills. Articulating complex scientific concepts clearly and concisely is
a vital skill in any profession.
