Ordering Combo Meals: Greatest Common Factor 2/5
Today, we will explore another way of looking at factors that is best used when looking for the Greatest
Common Factor.

Part 1 - INTRO Look at the scenarios below. Find what is “common” to all items being ordered. Then,
pull out what is common so that you could just ask for that once and then record what each person/item
would be. See the example below.

Example: A mom ordering drive-thru for her 3 kids orders:

1 burger with apples + 1 nuggets with apples +1 taco with apples

What is common (the same) to all three orders? ____________________

If the mom orders the apples separately, what is left to the order? Fill in the blanks below.

PROBLEM 2
Al’s House of Eggs N’at makes omelets. Al begins each day with 150 eggs to make his famous Bestern
Western Omelets. After making 1 omelet, he has 144 eggs left. After making 2 omelets, he has 138 eggs
left. After making 3 omelets, he has 132 eggs left.
A) Think about the number of eggs Al has left after making each omelet. Describe the pattern.

Subtract 6 eggs
B) Determine the number of eggs left after Al makes the next two omelets. Use the sentence
starters below to assist you.

A) Think about how the coin value changes each year. Describe the pattern.

B) Determine the coin value after 4 years and after 5 years.

In _________ years, it will be worth _______
In _________ years, it will be worth _______

A lowercase letter is used to name a sequence. a
The first term, or initial term, is referred to as a1. a1= ist Term
The remaining terms are named according to the term number. a3 = 3rd Term
a4 = 4th term

From these rules, you can develop a formula so that you do not need to determine the value of the previous term to
determine subsequent terms.

An explicit formula of a sequence is a formula for calculating the value of each term of a sequence using the term’s
position in the sequence. The explicit formula for determining the nth term of an arithmetic sequence is:

Previously, you explored the relationship between two variables that had data values that were _______________________,
quantitative or
numerical. Data that can be grouped into categories, such as favorite color, are called ____________________
categorical data. One method of
organizing categorical data is to use a two-way frequency table.

2
A two-way frequency table is a special table that allows us to look at __________ categorical variables together. These tables help to
patterns/trends
reveal possible _____________________ in one variable that may depend on the category of the other. It’s a special type of
frequency table.

b. What observations can you make from the data in the table above?

3
A two-way frequency table is helpful in organizing each group’s frequency in an efficient way. However, it is common to determine
the total number of people surveyed just to ensure that a good survey was taken. Determining this total is also helpful to ensure
that you recorded the data accurately within the table. For example, if you know 50 people took part in the survey, and the sum of
the joint frequencies is 47, then you know that you are missing three data points from the data set.
PRACTICE # 1: The Garden Grove community outreach director wants to plan special summer activities for the members

community members. Participants identified their age and then chose from four given activities. The responses gathered
from the survey are shown.
