HOMEWORK No 2:

Content: Distributed Forces: Centroids and Centers of Gravity.

Distributed Loads on Beams

Forces on Submerged Surfaces.

Analysis of Structures: The method of Joints

Analysis of Structures: The method of Sections

Solve the following exercises considering that variable COD refers to the last two digit of your assigned code by
the university. Take into account that an exercise without the correspondent procedure is incorrect (doesn’t
matter if the values are correct):

1. Locate the centroid of the plane area shown:

2. The following retaining wall is made of normal weight concrete. Determine the position of the Center of
Gravity G of the wall:

3. Determine the position of the centroid in y direction of the following composite beam:
4. For the beams and loading shown, determine (a) the magnitude and location of the resultant of the
distributed load, (b) the reactions at the beam supports.

5. An elevated storage tank for water has a conic shape in the top and a semispherical base and its built in a
thin cold-formed steel sheet. Determine the stored water volume when it is completely full.
6. The cross section of a concrete dam is as shown. For a 1-m-wide dam section determine (a) the resultant
of the reaction forces exerted by the ground on the base AB of the dam, (b) the point of application of the resultant
of part a, (c) the resultant of the pressure Forces exerted by the water on the face BC of the dam. Is the dam safe
to work considering the possible turn-over the A point?

7. Using the method of joints, determine the force in each member of the truss shown. State whether each
member is in tension or compression.
8. Using the method of joints, determine the force in each member of the truss shown. State whether each
member is in tension or compression.
9. A monosloped roof truss is loaded as shown. Determine the force in members FI, HI, and HJ using THE
METHOD OF SECTIONS!!!!!.

10 Determine and Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment diagrams of the following beams. Indicate for
each case the maximum value of shear force and bending moment:
