1 Introduction
This is a guide for a transmission oil cooler selection.
There are both applications without any selection/recommendation (mandatory applications,
only one oil cooler available) and application with strong recommendations.
The recommendations give useful and important information about how to specify a truck depending on
different conditions such as
- application
- environment
- road conditions
- topography
2 Temperature Information
2.1 Driver Information
In order to give the driver information and if needed warning about the gearbox status,
below guidelines have been set up as limitations/rules for how to display information in
the instrument cluster.
WARNING CONDITION
Temperature
Regular and recurring yellow lamp should not occur.
(option)
0
Yellow lamp Lasting >300 min. regularly with temp. >100 C.
0
Yellow lamp Lasting >10 min. regularly with temp. >120 C.
0
Lasting > 0.5 min. with temp. >140 C.
Red lamp
Dramatically increased risk of seizing above this temp.

Observe that the given weights are approximate and will vary a bit between different applications.
4.1.1 Topography
When selecting the load case (section 4.2.1), start to check the topography the vehicle will operate in.
If a complementary condition results in a more severe topography classification, the oil cooler should
be chosen accordingly.
Flat topography
Sales variant T-FLAT
Hilly topography
Sales variant T-HILLY
Please see the relevant fact sheet for more detailed information.
4.1.2 Climate
Temperate climate
Maximum shade temperature above +30ºC occurs less than 15 days over a period of 5 years.
Hot climate
Ambient Temperature Hot. Up to +400C. Warmer allowed 25 h/year.
Limit for temperate climate is exceeded.
Select the Load Case (LC1-LC12) in the appropriate table by using the topography
defined in section 3.1.1. Finalize the cooler choice in table 3 or 4.

Vehicles used in intensive Stop and Go operating cycles >60 minutes, TC-MWO is required.
In some cases where the gearbox PTO is severely used, extra care about oil cooler choice is needed.
For these applications, follow the below stated directives.
● PTO usage (transmission PTO) 1 hour or more, TC-MWO is required if the directive doesn’t
require TCMWOH2 or TC-MAOH2.
In applications where a split box is utilized for running high-capacity PTO:s, the additional directives
should be followed.
Total driving time is defined as all the driving time through the gearbox life time. Seasonal increases
of GOT due to higher ambient temperatures will occur. Increases of GOT due to driving conditions will
happen more or less frequently. The driving time with increased temperatures must be included in the
total driving time.
If the GOT is above a certain level more than 90 minutes then this GOT level is considered as
continuous working temperature.
If the above stated limits are exceeded the gearbox durability will decrease and the risk of gearbox
failure will increase.
Depending on driving condition, ambient temperature, topography etc occasional increase in GOT can
be accepted as long as the temperature requirements in section 5.2 are fulfilled.
One common example of occasional increase is climbing of hills at low speed on an otherwise flat or
predominantly flat driving condition.
