Topic: Quadratic Inequalities

A. Background Information for Learners

A quadratic inequality is an inequality of the form
a x 2 +bx+ c> 0 ,
Where a , b , and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0. The inequality ¿ ,>, ≤ ,and ≥may also
be used.
Examples:
1. x 2+ 2< 4 3. x 2−2 x−3 x ≥ 0
−1
2. ( x−2 )2 +2>0 4. x 2−2 x−3 x< 0
2
 A.2
 The symbol ¿∧¿ the values of x are not included so we are going to put a
whole or an open circle on the number line.
 The symbol ≤∧≥ the values of x are included so we are going to put a solid
circle on the number line.

Examples:
1. x 2+ 5 x−6<0
Solution:
x 2+ 5 x−6<0 Given. In the quadratic Inequalities, the
process in solving the value of x is the
same process in our previous topic which is
quadratic Equation.
( x +6 ) ( x−1 ) <0 Since the inequality is factorable so we
factor the given inequality in order to find
x−1=0the value of x .
x +6=0 x=1 To find the value of x , we use the zero
x=−6 factor property as discussed on our first
module.
Since we already have the value of x , we are going to make a number line.
The values -6 and 1 divide the number line into three regions A, B, and
C.
A B C

-6 1

To see whether the inequality x 2+ 5 x−6<0 is true or false in each region, choose
a test point from each region and substitute its value for x in inequality
x 2+ 5 x−6<0 . If the result is true, then the region containing the test point is a
solution region.
Region Test Point Value (x +6)(x−1)< 0 Result
A -7 (−1)(−8)<0 False
8< 0
B 0 (6)(−1)<0 True
−6< 0
C 2 (8)(1)< 0 False
8<0
The region B satisfy the inequality and since the inequality symbol is ¿, the numbers -6
and 1 are not included in the solution set(our shaded region).
The graph is
A B C

Solution set: -6 1
{ x|−6< x <1 }

2. Sergio has a parcel into smaller rectangular lots. The length of each lot is 5
meters longer than its width and its area is greater than 150 square meters. What
could be the dimensions of the lot?

Solution:
In the given situation, the width of the lot can be represented by x and the length
by x+5. Then the quadratic inequality is
x ( x +5 ) >150 or 2
x + 5 x−150> 0

(Length)(Width)
Find the roots of the given Quadratic Inequality
2
x + 5 x−150> 0 Factor the given quadratic Inequality
( x +15)( x−10)=0 Solve for x
x +15=0 x−10=0
x=−15
x=10
The values -15 and 10 divide the number line into three regions A,B, and C.
A B C
- 15 10
To see whether the inequality x 2+ 5 x−6<0 is true or false in each region, choose a test
point from each region and substitute its value for x in inequality x 2+ 5 x−6<0 . If the
resulting is true, then the region containing the test point is a solution region.
Region Test Point Value (x +15)(x−10)> 0 Result
A -16 (−1)(−26)>0 True
26> 0
B 0 (15)(−10)>0 False
−150>0
C 11 (26)(1)>0 True
26> 0
The region A and C satisfy the inequality and since the inequality symbol is ¿, the
numbers -16 and 11 are not included in the solution set.
The graph is
A B C

- 15 10
Solution set
{ x|−15> x >10 }

C. Objectives/ Learning Targets
At the end of the lesson, the leaners must be able to:
1. Give an example of quadratic inequalities;
2.Solve quadratic inequalities; and
3. Solve problems involving quadratic inequalities.
D. Directions/ instructions
 For day 1-2, read and understand the background information for
learners from pages 1-2.
 For day 3, answer the activity number and for day 4 answer the
activity number 2.
 Return the Learning Activity Sheets and keep this module.

E. Exercises:
Activity 1: Give examples of Quadratic Inequalities.
Activity 2: Solve and Graph Quadratic Inequalities. .
F. Values Integration
Human are diverse. We have different likes, beliefs and ideals. In every
person that we meet in our daily life, we should consider their differences and
embrace them for who they are.
