Exercise 3

Principal Dimensions of the Ship

The principal dimensions of ships are fundamental measurements that
define their size, shape, and characteristics. These dimensions vary significantly
among different types of ships, reflecting their diverse purposes, capabilities, and
operational requirements. Before the activity, let us review the principal
dimensions commonly found in various types of ships.
 LOA - Length Overall (LOA)
 LWL - Length at the waterline (LWL)
 LBP - Length between perpendicular(LBP)
 SLWL - Summer Load Waterline (SLWL)
 FP - Forward perpendicular (FP)
 AP - Aft perpendicular (AP)
 Breadth
 Depth
 Draft

Other Measurements
In addition to the principal dimensions, the following, also shown in are also used
in describing ships:
 Length on Waterline (LWL)
 Freeboard (F)
 Displacement Volume (V)
 Displacement (W)
 Buoyancy
 Reserve Buoyancy
 Moment of Inertia (I)
 Tonnage
 Sheer
 Camber
 Tumble Home
 Flare
 Deadrise
