WORKSHEET 3

CH: 1 Electric flux & Gauss’s law

1. Two identical circular loops 1 and 2 of radius R each have linear charge densities -𝝀 &
+𝝀 C/m. The loops are placed coaxially with their centres R √𝟑 distance apart. Find the
magnitude and direction of the net electric field at the centre of the loop 1

2. Define electric flux. Write its SI unit. How does the electric flux due to a point charge,
enclosed by a spherical Gaussian’s surface get affected when its radius is increased?

3. State gauss’s law. Deduce an expression for electric field intensity due to an infinitely
long straight uniformly charged wire.

4. Use Gauss’s law to find the electric field due to a uniformly charged infinite plane sheet.
What is the direction of field for positive and negative charge densities? Represent
graphically the variation of electric field with distance for a uniformly charged plane
sheet. Find the work done in bringing a charge q from infinity to a point, distance r, in
front of the charged plane sheet.

5. A thin metallic spherical shell of radius R carries a charge Q on its surface. A point
charge Q/2 is placed at its centre C and another charge +2Q is placed outside the shell at
a distance x from the centre. Find the electric flux through the cell. State the law used.
Find the force on the charges at the centre C of shell and at the point A.

6. A right circular cylinder of length ‘a’ and radius ‘r’ has its centre at the origin and its axis
along the x-axis so that one face is at x = + a/2 and the other at x = – a/2, as shown in the
figure. A uniform electric field is acting parallel to the x-axis such that

for x < 0.
Find out the flux (i) through the flat faces, (ii) through the curved surface of the cylinder.
What is the net outward flux through the cylinder and the net charge inside the cylinder?
7. Find the electrical intensity due to a uniformly charged spherical cell at a point. 1) outside
the shell 2) inside the shell. Plot the graph of the electric field with distance from the
centre of the shell.

8. Does the charge given to a metallic sphere depend on whether it is hollow or solid? Give
reason.

9. A long charged cylinder of linear charge density +λ1 is surrounded by a hollow coaxial
conducting cylinder of linear charge density -λ2.Use Gauss's law to obtain expressions for
the electric field at a point (a) in the space between the cylinders, and (b) outside the
larger cylinder.

10. A point charge +Q is placed at the centre O of an uncharged hollow spherical conductor
of inner radius ‘a’ and outer radius ‘b’.i) Find the magnitude and sign of the charge
induced on the inner and outer surface of the conducting shell. ii) The magnitude of
electric field vector at a distance a) r= a/2, b) r=2b from the centre of the shell.

11. A wire AB of length L has linear charge density λ=kx, where x is measured from the end
A of the wire. This wire is enclosed by a Gaussian hollow surface. Find the expression
for electric flux through this surface?

12. What is the electric flux through a cube of side 1cm which encloses an electric dipole?
