Presentation

As a beginner on welding, it is important that you learn to identify and select materials and tools.
This lesson is designed for you to know the basic knowledge of tools and materials, its uses and
acquire the skills in manipulating them.
Read the following paragraphs on How to Make A Metal Chair:

Draw out the general design of your chair on graph paper, including dimensions. Measure four legs,
and use the abrasive chop saw to cut each leg out of the rectangular tube. Place the legs in a clamp to
hold them steady as you weld the tabs to the legs.
To trace the shape of the seat, use a silver marker and cut with the plasma cutter. Use an angle
grinder to smooth the corners. Weld the seat to the four legs.
Cut back support with the abrasive chop saw. Weld the back support bars evenly to the seat, then
B. Establishing a Purpose for weld the top support bar to the back supports. Smooth any rough edges with a grinder. Paint your chair
if you wish with a water-based industrial paint. (Source: https://homesteady.com/how)

members, visit a welding shop around your neighborhood and ask the ten tools that the welder uses.
We are required to answer the same table above. However, for welding shop that are far from your
house, you may ask your parents/guardian/household members to video the interview with the welder
using the mobile phone and answer the table above.

I. Introduction (Time Frame: 1hour)
This lesson will help you understand the concepts and underlying principles in interpreting simple
technical drawings in SMAW. You will learn how to identify, read, interpret, and draw weld symbols
according to plans.
Activity: MY SYMBOL BANK
Direction: Identify 5 letter symbols and uses of these. Copy and answer the table below on a separate

the Lesson
Symbol Location/Sector/Area Used Meaning

Read the following Paragraphs:

Welding Symbol
Location of Elements: The elements of a welding symbol have standard locations with respect to each
other.
Location Significance of Arrow: The arrow element in a welding symbol in conjunction with the
reference line determines the arrow side and other side of a weld.
References: When a specification, process, test, or other references are needed to clarify a welding
symbol, the reference is placed in a tail on the welding symbol. The letters complete joint penetration
(CJP) may be used in the tail of the arrow to indicate that a complete joint penetration groove weld is
required, regardless of the type of weld or joint preparation. The tail may be omitted when no
specification, process, or other reference is required with a welding symbol.
C. Presenting Dimensions: Dimensions of a weld are shown on the same side of the reference line as the weld symbol.
Examples/Instances of the The size of the weld is shown to the left of the weld symbol, and the length of the weld is placed on the
New Lesson right. If a length is not given, the weld symbol applies to that portion of the joint between abrupt changes
in the direction of welding or between specified dimension lines. If a weld symbol is shown on each side
of the reference line, dimensions are required to be given for each weld even though both welds are
identical.
The term weld symbol and welding symbol have different meanings. A weld symbol indicates the
required type of weld. The welding symbol includes the weld symbol and supplementary information. A
complete welding symbol consists of the following elements: Reference line, Arrow, Basic weld symbol,
Dimensions and other data Supplementary symbol, Finish symbol, Tail, and Specification, process, and
other references.
Answer the following briefly:
1. Explain how the dimensions are placed on left and right.
2, Why are weld symbol and welding symbol different?
