Installing and Configuring Computer Systems (ICCS)
Assembling Computer Hardware

Background Information for Learners

Assembling computer hardware can be very exciting but without proper unit assembly
planning it might cause damage to the equipment or harmful to the person working on it and Ensuring
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures in accordance with systems
requirements this will be avoided. Just like a carpenter that conducts proper planning in building a
house to avoid accidents, you should plan and ensure that OHS policies and procedures are followed
as you assemble a computer.

Standards mandate reduction, removal or replacement of job site hazards. OHS programs also
help minimize the effects of such hazards. The goal of an OHS program is to foster a safe and healthy
work environment. OHS may also protect workers, classmates, customers, and many others who
might be affected by the workplace environment.

As a future computer technician, you must always comply with OHS policies before performing
any computer operation like assembling and disassembling. Remember that a computer is an electrical
appliance which may cause electric shock when not properly handled. There are simple steps that you
can follow in the assembly process. Following these procedures appropriately may lead to a successful
computer hardware assembly free from accidents and harm.

Health and safety procedures is the responsibility of all persons in the computer and
technology industries. It is a definite plan of action designed to prevent accidents and occupational
diseases.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Installing and Configuring Computer Systems (ICCS)
Assembling Computer Hardware
Background Information for Learners

In the previous lesson, you have learned the different physical components of a computer
known as hardware and their functions. Hardware may be an input device, a data processor, an output
device or the cables and wires that connect the different parts of the computers. Understanding of the
hardware is important in assembling a computer system.

However, to assemble a computer system, you will need tools, equipment and testing devices.
Tools allow you to install, remove or perform other actions on the computer hardware. For example,
you need a screw driver to fix the motherboard on the chassis. You will need patch panels and switches
to connect computers on a network and you will need multi-tester to test electric current or voltage
within the system.

Things to REMEMBER…

1. Long Nose Pliers - It is used for holding, bending and stretching the lead of electronics
component or connecting wire.
2. Soldering Iron - It is used to join two or more metal conductors with the support of
soldering lead melted around it.
3. Desoldering Tool - It is used to unsolder unwanted parts or component in the circuit
with the support of soldering pencil.
4. Philips Screw Driver - It is used to drive or fasten positive slotted screws.
5. LAN Tester - It is designed to test most network cable wiring. You can either conduct
an auto or manual test.
6. Flat Screw Driver - It is used to drive or fasten negative slotted screws.
7. Crimping Tool - It is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one
or both of them in a way that causes them to hold each other. The result of
the tool's work is called a crimp.
8. Patch Panel –It provides interconnect or cross-connect patching methods to splice and
terminate cables.
9. Switch – It is a piece of a physical circuitry component that governs the signal flow.
Having a switch or toggle switch allows a connection to be opened or closed.

Types and Parts of Computers

Background Information for Learners

One of the major topics under Computer Systems Servicing qualification is the Assembly and Dis-
assembly of computer systems. It is incorporated with the different topics such as types and parts of
computer. It tackles about computer hardware peripheral, its definition and classification. This lesson
will teach you to identify the different computer parts and types as well as on how to classify each
part.

Hardware

Computer hardware includes the physical parts of a computer, such as the case, [1] central processing
unit (CPU), monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, graphics card, sound card, speakers
and motherboard.

Input Device

An input device is any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing you to interact
with and control it. The picture shows a Logitech trackball mouse, which is an example of an input
device.

The most commonly used or primary input devices on a computer are the keyboard and
mouse. However, there are dozens of other devices that can also be used to input data into the
computer.

16
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

Downloaded by dicnhs ict (dicnhs.ict@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|29377537

Types of Input Devices

1. Mouse - A computer mouse is a handheld hardware

input device that controls a cursor in a GUI (graphical
user interface) and can move and select text, icons,
files, and folders on your computer.
2. Keyboard - A computer keyboard is one of the
primary input devices used with a computer. Similar
to an electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed of
buttons that create letters, numbers, and symbols, as
well as perform other functions.

3. Microphone - Sometimes abbreviated as mic, a

microphone is a hardware peripheral and input device
originally invented by Emile Berliner in 1877. A
microphone allows computer users to input audio
into their computers.

4. Webcam - A webcam is a camera that connects to a

computer. It captures either still pictures or motion
video, and with the aid of software, can transmit its
video on the Internet in real-time.

5. Scanner - a scanner or optical scanner is a hardware

input device that optically "reads" and image and
converts it into a digital signal.

Output Device

An output device is any peripheral that receives data from a computer, usually for display,
projection, or physical reproduction. For example, the image shows an inkjet printer, an output device
that can make a hard copy of anything shown on the monitor. Monitors and printers are two of the
most commonly used output devices used with a computer.

17
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

Downloaded by dicnhs ict (dicnhs.ict@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|29377537

Types of Output Devices

1. Monitor - a monitor is an output device that displays

video images and text. A monitor is made up of
circuitry, a screen, a power supply, buttons to adjust
screen settings, and casing that holds all of these
components.

2. Headphone - Sometimes referred to as earphones,

headphones are a hardware output device that either
plug into a computer line out or speakers.
Headphones allow you to listen to audio or watch a
movie without disturbing people around you.

3. Printer - A printer is an external hardware output

device that takes the electronic data stored on a
computer or other device and generates a hard copy
of it.

4. Projector - A projector is an output device that can

take images generated by a computer or Blu-ray
player and reproduce them by projection onto a
screen, wall, or another surface.

5. Speaker - A computer speaker is an output hardware

device that connects to a computer to generate sound.
The signal used to produce the sound that comes from
a computer speaker is created by the computer's
sound card.

Processing Device

When a computer receives data from an input device (e.g., keyboard), the data goes through
an intermediate stage before it's sent to an output device (e.g., monitor). A processing device is any
device in a computer that handles the intermediate stage of processing the incoming data. For
example, in the diagram below, the CPU is the processing device.

18

Downloaded by dicnhs ict (dicnhs.ict@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|29377537

Types of Processing Devices

1. CPU - Alternately referred to as a processor, central

processor, or microprocessor, the CPU (pronounced
sea-pea-you) is the central processing unit of the
computer. A computer's CPU handles all instructions
it receives from hardware and software running on the
computer.

2. GPU - Short for graphics processing unit, GPU is an

electronic circuit used to speed up the creation of both
2D and 3D images. GPUs can either be integrated,
meaning they are built into the computer's CPU or
motherboard, or they can be dedicated, meaning they
are a separate piece of hardware known as a video
card.

3. Motherboard - Alternatively referred to as the mb,

mainboard, mboard, mobo, mobd, backplane board,
base board, main circuit board, planar board, system
board, or a logic board on Apple computers. The
motherboard is a printed circuit board and foundation
of a computer that is the biggest board in a computer
chassis. It allocates power and allows communication
to and between the CPU, RAM, and all other computer
hardware components.

19
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

Downloaded by dicnhs ict (dicnhs.ict@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|29377537

4. NIC - Short for network interface card, the NIC is also

referred to as an Ethernet card and network adapter. A
NIC is a computer expansion card for connecting to a
network (e.g., home network or Internet) using an
Ethernet cable with an RJ-45 connector.

Storage Device

Alternatively referred to as digital storage, storage, storage media, or storage medium, a storage
device is any hardware capable of holding information either temporarily or permanently.

There are two types of storage devices used with computers: a primary storage device, such as RAM,
and a secondary storage device, such as a hard drive. Secondary storage can be removable, internal,
or external.

Types of Storage Devices

1. Magnetic Storage Devices - Any storage medium that
utilizes magnetic patterns to represent information is
considered magnetic media. Good examples of a
magnetic media and magnetic storage is a tape drive,
floppy diskette, and hard drive.

2. Optical storage devices - Alternatively referred to as

a disc drive, optical media, optical storage, Optical
disc drive, and optical disk, an optical disc is any
media read using a laser assembly.

3. Flash memory devices - Flash memory is an

integrated circuit that does not need continuous
power to retain data, but is a bit more expensive than
magnetic storage.
