MAYAPYAP
National High School STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE IN SCIENCE 10
Quarter II, Week 5

Lesson 5: Qualitative Characteristics of Images Formed by Plane and Curved Mirrors

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

S10FE-IIg-50: Predict the qualitative characteristics (orientation, type, and magnification)

of images formed by plane and curved mirrors and lenses.

In this set of activities, you should:

1. illustrate the images formed by plane and curved mirror, and
2. describe the characteristics of images formed by plane and curved mirrors.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER?

Good day Maylinian! Let us enjoy as we learn about the different qualitative
characteristics of images formed by plane and curved mirrors 😊

Figure 1. Types of Mirror

Types of Mirror
1. Plane Mirror is a mirror with a flat reflective surface.
2. Curved Mirror is a mirror with a curved reflecting surface.
a) Concave Mirror is a spherical mirror that curve inward like a spoon and create illusion of largeness.
b) Convex Mirror is a spherical mirror that bulge out and distort the reflected image, making it smaller.
Characteristics of Images Formed by Plane Mirror
1. The image formed in a plane mirror has the same size as the object.
2. The image is as far behind the plane mirror as an object is in front of the mirror (same distance).
3. The image formed in a plane mirror has the same orientation as the object.
4. The image formed in a plane mirror is laterally inverted.

Enrichment Activity 1
Copy the illustration below. Write the object words: “MAYLINIAN AKO” in such a way that it can be
read properly in front of a plane mirror (laterally inverted). Then, provide a short explanation how do the size,
distance, and orientation of the object compare with the size, distance, and orientation of the image. (10 points)
