Introductory Message
Welcome to Research I!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Cadiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Research 1 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Research 1 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Variables
I. Learning Competency with Code
1. Distinguish variables depending on their uses in planning a simple science
experiment (SP_RS7-IPS-II-h-i-10)

Support Competency:
1. Identify the dependent, independent, and controlled variable

II. Background Information for Learners

Variable is any property of a person, thing that varies and is not fixed. They are
factors affecting the result of the study. It is something that can change and or can
have more than one value. It is also what an experimenter changes, observes or
measures what happens as a result of the manipulation.
The three types of variables are: independent, dependent, and controlled
variable. Independent variable (IV) is the factor that is varied or manipulated. It is
also the assumed cause” of a problem. Dependent Variable (DV) is the factor that is
measured or observed; the change that is brought about or is affected by the change
in the independent variable; and the “assumed effect” of another variable. Controlled
Variable (CV) is the factor that is kept constant all throughout the experiment (Gore
n.d., 34-35).

In this learning activity, you will learn about dependent, independent, and
controlled variables.

III. Activity Proper

Activity 1: Effects of Fertilizer on the Growth of Monggo Plant

The table below shows the example/s of independent, dependent, and

controlled variables as used in the study.

IV CV DV
Amount of Type of Amount of Temperature Size of Pot Stem
Fertlizer (g) Soil Water (ml) (℃) Height (cm)
5 Loam 10 35 Medium 5.0
10 Loam 10 35 Medium 5.3
15 Loam 10 35 Medium 5.5
20 Loam 10 35 Medium 5.8

1
Directions: Identify the research problem, independent variable (IV), dependent
variable (DV), and controlled variables (CV) in the given scenario. Write your
answer on a sheet of paper.

1. Don’t you hate when the bread goes moldy before you get to it? What sort of
bread will last longest without starting a penicillin factory? Should you store it on
the counter, to the cupboard, or in the refrigerator? To test this, you bought six
different loaves of bread, everything from the seven- grain to Wonder bread.
Even though it was a pain, you made sure they all have the same “best before”
date. You split each loaf into thirds, and stored a third of each in a sealed plastic
bag: on the counter, in a closed cupboard, in the refrigerator. You checked then
every morning to see how many days each one lasted until it showed visible
signs of mold.

Activity 2.

Directions: Identify the independent and the dependent variable. Write your answer
on a sheet of paper.

1. Survival rate of Red Lauan (Shorea negrosensis) and White Lauan (Shorea
contorta) using Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) Leaf Extract

2. The Effect of High Fructose Corn Syrup on Mice (Mus musculus) memory

3. Growth of Mysid Shrimps (Mesopodopsis orientails) in Different Iodine

Solutions and Exposure Time

4. Effect of Crude Lactobacilli Serum as Potential Inoculant on the Growth and

Yield of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)

5. Physiochemical Analysis and Plankton Density of Water Samples Collected

from Sum-ag River, Bacolod City

6. Extending the Vase Life of Rose (Rosa indica) with Varying Amount of
Coconut (Cocos nucifera) Water

7. Heating Value and Combustion Gas Composition of Rice Hull Briquettes

8. Production of Spirulina Algae (Arthros piraplatensis) under LED Lights

9. Breaking Strength of Bamboo Tiles

10. Toxicity Level of Lead, Mercury, and Copper in Oyster Mushroom

walking the different routes, Clothing, Shoes, Health condition,
Weather, Stopwatch, Specific Period of the Day, No. of Trials per
Route
esearch Which storage condition will extend the shelf-life of a particular type
