Let us start your learning journey! 

Brief Introduction
Before you can proceed with performing body scrub, you will be
needing a few things to help you carry out and have the best results with
the said activity.

A. Tools:
1. Wash cloth or Face towel – this is used to dampen and cleanse the
client’s body. It can also be used to rinse the client’s body
2. Basin – is a container used to hold the face towel or wash cloth and
lukewarm water
3. Mixing bowl – a container wherein scrubbing materials are put into
or sometimes used to mix with other materials.
4. Spatula – a spoon like tool used to lift and mix scrubbing materials
5. Tray/Trolley- all the tools and materials are arranged in this
container to be more organized
6. Body sponge- this looks like a foam or a sponge used to remove
dead skin with the help of liquid soap
7. Exfoliating gloves- used to remove dead skin, but rougher than a
body sponge. It is more effective to use with soap.
8. Large bath towel- this can be used to cover the client’s body and to
dry the body after shower
9. Pillow- it gives comfort and relaxation to clients while giving a body
scrub

B. Materials:
1. Alcohol/Hand sanitizer – use 70% alcohol to remove germs and
bacteria
2. Lukewarm water- somehow warm but not cold. Some clients want
it a bit warmer but still tolerable.
3. Beauty soap/whitening soap – it helps in removing dirt and excess
scrubbing materials from the skin
4. Loofah/Luffa- this is also used as a sponge; it is made up of a dried
gourd
5. Body lotion- it makes the skin soft, smooth, and moist
6. Scrubbing materials- it can be chemical exfoliates manufactured
by industries and can be commercially bought from stores, or

4
natural exfoliates made from plants and other ingredients found in
the kitchen pantry.

Natural vs. Commercial Scrubbing Materials

It was mentioned earlier that scrubbing materials can be commercially

bought, they are manufactured with high chemical content. These kinds of
scrubbing materials can be stored for a long period of time but it still
depends on the expiration date specified by the manufacturer. A scrubbing
material can be made in our respective houses with the use of different
ingredients found in the kitchen. We call it Do It Yourself (DIY) scrubbing
materials or simply Natural Scrubbing materials. It has less chemicals that
are harmful to our body and to our environment. But the shelf life of these
scrubbing materials are shorter. It can’t be stored for more than a year or
so.

Different Ingredients that can be used as scrubbing materials

1. Essential oils – oil extracted usually from plants (ex. Lavender, tea
tree, rosemary, jojoba, grape seed, olive oil, coconut oil). It is good for
dry skin, as it also prevents wrinkles.
2. Salt - it is good for removing dirt deep in the pores. It can also prevent
bacteria that can cause breakouts.
3. Sugar - it is suitable for normal to dry to skin as it moisturizes and
hydrates the skin. It restores the cells faster because sugar contains
alpha hydroxyl acid and glycolic acid which are good exfoliates.
4. Oatmeal - is an excellent natural skin exfoliate. Which is best for
sensitive and dry skin as it keeps the skin’s natural oil.
5. Coffee Grounds - reduce the appearance of cellulites and protects our
skin from UVB. It is also good for removing dead skin.
6. Lemon - is a good source of Vitamin C as it reduces skin discoloration
and helps in whitening the skin. It is also good for oily skin because it
reduces the oil in the skin.
7. Milk - provides moisture and hydrates the skin. It also act as a
whitening ingredient. Because of the presence of a substance called
retinol in milk, it fights premature aging. It is also good for sensitive
skin.
8. Honey – raw honey is good in preventing acne and other skin diseases
such as eczema and psoriasis.

Natural scrubbing materials can be found in our kitchen pantry. Some

of them are made of recycled kitchen ingredients such as the coffee
grounds. This will save us money, but natural scrubbing materials are
messy and should be rinsed well with water and soap.

5
Different Types of Natural Scrubbing Materials

Coffee and Sugar Body Scrub

Things needed:
Measuring spoon/cups ½ cup coffee grounds
Mixing bowl ½ cup brown sugar
Spatula/spoon ¼ cup olive oil
Mason jar/container 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

Procedure:
Mix all the ingredients in the mixing bowl. Be sure that the texture is
not watery, just a bit moist. Put it in a clean container with a cover or
mason jar. You can use it twice a week.

Oatmeal and Milk Body Scrub

Things needed:
Measuring spoon/cups 1 cup milk (fresh milk)
Mixing bowl 2 tbs. powdered milk dissolved in 1 C. warm
Spatula/spoon water if there’s no fresh milk (alternative)
Mason jar/container ½ cup brown sugar
½ cup oatmeal
Procedure:
Mix all the ingredients in the mixing bowl. Be sure that the mixture is
spreadable. If it is watery add a little more oatmeal but if it is dry add a bit
more milk.

Sugar and Lemon Body Scrub

Things needed:
Measuring spoon/cups 1 cup brown sugar
Mixing bowl ¼ cup olive oil
Spatula/spoon 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Mason jar/container

Procedure:
Mix all the ingredients in the mixing bowl. Be sure that the texture is
not soggy, just a bit moist. Put it in a clean container with a cover or mason
jar. You can use it twice a week.

Now, you can decide on what’s the best scrubbing materials suitable
for your skin type. The scrubbing materials you will use should depend on
your client’s skin type and needs. That’s why assessment and client
consultation are very important.

6
All the tools and materials needed should be neatly arranged on a tray
or trolley for easy access. A well-organized tray will definitely save you time
and energy in performing a body scrub.
