CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
Gender is perceived as a social determinant of health. Thus, pertinent training extended to
healthcare providers in giving gender-sensitive care to patients can most likely be a mindful
response to some gender-based health inequalities; thereby, boosting efficient and effective
patient outcomes.
Gender sensitivity refers to a behavior that avoids discrimination by understanding and
accepting the multiple differences between men and women (DPS Bangalore, 2021). Gender-
sensitivity indicates gender consciousness. It presents the policy or program that
acknowledges the important effects of gender norms, roles, and relations.
HYPOTHESIS
There is no significant difference on the level of
gender sensitivity among Radiologic
Technology Interns.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This research undertaking will be anchored on the Gender Schema Theory proposed by Sandra Bem (1981) and
the Social Learning Theory by Albert Bandura (1965) to further elaborate the ideas used in this study.
Accordingly, Bem (1981) stressed that children learn about male and female roles from the culture they are
surrounded with. At the earliest stages of social development, children modify their behavior to match the gender
norms of their culture.
These gender schemas greatly affect both information processing and attitudes and beliefs governing “gender-
appropriate” behavior. Hence, the creation of a child’s cognitive schema of gender was derived from the norms of
their culture (Cherry, 2020; Vinney, 2019).
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Bem’s theory highlighted four different gender categories, namely:
a) Sex-typed individuals are those who identify with their gender and process information through
the lens of that gender schema;
b) Cross-typed individuals process information through the lens of the opposite gender;
d) Undifferentiated individuals do not show consistent use of sex-typed processing (Cherry, 2020;
Vinney, 2019).
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
The Social Learning Theory presented by Albert Bandura (1965) explains how children acquire
their gender identity based on the influence of other people (most importantly their significant
others --- parents, relatives, teachers). Bandura’s four stages of learning depict a what child
goes through while developing gender behavior:
a) Attention - behavior is basically noticed and observed;
b) Memory - behavior is memorized and brought to memory;
c) Imitation - behavior is performed or 'reproduced' based on Imitating what they see around
the; and
d) Motivation - behavior is based on the desired consequences or what will be gained by the
behavior, either immediately or in the near future.

SCOPE & LIMITAtions
This study aims on identifying the level of gender sensitivity of
Radiologic Technology interns in assisting their patient School-
Year 2022-2023. Based on the aforementioned purpose of this
study, this will be a descriptive quantitative research. The
survey will be employed as data collection method. This study
will be conducted from the September-December 2022. It will
determine the significant difference in the level of gender
sensitivity of the respondents when grouped and compared
according to age, sex, and socio-economic status. This study will
use the total enumeration method.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will be significant to the following entities:
Radiology Technologists
Radiology Technology Students
Radiologic Technology Department
Future Researchers
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Age. The term refers to the number of years a person has lived (Kowalczyk,
2021).
Gender. Gender refers to socially constructed characteristics of women and
men – such as norms, roles and relations of and between groups of women
and men.
Gender Sensitivity. the way service providers treat male or female clients in
service delivery facilities and thus affects client willingness to seek services,
continue to use services, and carry out the health behaviors advocated by the
services.
Internship. This term refers to a professional learning experience that offers
meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career
interest (UMBC, 2022).
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Radiologic Technologist. Also called as X-Ray Technologist. The term refers to a
medical professional responsible for using imaging machines and tools to create a map
of a patient’s internal tissues and organ systems to assess their overall health. Their
duties include explaining procedures to patients, calibrating imaging equipment and
preparing results (Indeed, 2022).
Sex. It is often categorized as females and males, but there are variations of sex
characteristics called intersex.
Socioeconomic Status. This term refers to the position of an individual or group on the
socioeconomic scale, which is determined by a combination of social and economic
factors such as income, amount and kind of education, type and prestige of
occupation, place of residence, and—in some societies or parts of society—ethnic origin
or religious background (APA Dictionary of Psychology, 2022).

METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
This study is a descriptive research design employing the survey method. Descriptive
research focuses to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation or
phenomenon. It can answer what, where, when and how questions, but not why
questions. It is an appropriate choice when the research aim is to identify
characteristics, frequencies, trends, and categories. It is useful when not much is
known yet about the topic or problem (Mc Combes, 2019). For the purpose of this
study, the significant difference in the level of gender sensitivity of Radiologic
Technology interns when grouped according to the variables explored in the study will
be determined.
Respondents
Instrument
Instrument
Validity. The survey questionnaire will be subjected for content validity through the
review by experts on the field employing the Good and Scates research instrument
validation scale to assess the accuracy of said questionnaire.
Reliability. The survey questionnaire will be subjected for pilot testing to thirty (30)
Nursing interns in Riverside College, Inc. to determine the reliability of the research
instrument. A re-test will be administered two (2) weeks after.
Data Gathering
Procedure
Approval for the conduct of the study instrument to the research respondents from the Dean of
the Radiologic Technology Department will initially be sought through a letter. The respondents
will be made to accomplish the free prior and consent form for their voluntary participation in the
study. The survey will be conducted by the researchers through the help of the college’s Guidance
Counselor. The respondents will be asked to answer the survey with full understanding and
honesty. They will be informed that results will be handled with absolute confidentiality. The
survey will be completed in 30 minutes. After the conduct of the study, data will be gathered,
organized, and encoded for computation using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
Data Analysis
This study will employ the descriptive and comparative analytical schemes and data will be
analyzed on the bases of the objectives found in Chapter 1.
