ACTIVITY NO.2
LABORATORY APPARATUS AND EQUIPMENT

Learning Objectives
At the end of the activity, you will be able to:
 Identify the name of the different laboratory apparatus and equipment.
 Describe the physical appearances and uses or functions of different laboratory apparatus and
equipment.

Materials
 Pen, Paper/Bond paper

Introduction
Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, like any branch of science, are quantitative and experimental
in nature. Students will spend of their time in the laboratory investigating and verifying chemical principles. It is the place
where they will test hypothesis, observe and make interferences or generalizations as they explore phenomena.

Laboratories are places where scientists and medical professionals conduct studies to perform other work relevant
fields. These laboratories contain equipment to help with such experiment. Some laboratory equipment and apparatuses
are used to measure, ignite, contain, hold, or weigh various substances for multiple purposes relating to the experiment.

Whether your laboratory research comprises working with proteins, cell culture, air, water, soil, or blood, key lab
equipment will support various testing needs. General lab equipment can be found in research labs, diagnostic testing in
medical labs, manufacturing, educational labs and more. In short, wherever there is a lab, you will find general lab
equipment.

Laboratory apparatus and equipment are the tools required to complete laboratory work. There are seven
classifications of laboratory apparatus and equipment and these are the (1) measuring type, (2) reaction type,
(3) vessel type, (4) separation type, (5) solid clamp type, (6) heating type, and (7) matching type.

Measuring type is mainly used for measuring quality, volume, temperature and density and mostly are glassware,
including measuring glass, transfer pipette, measuring cylinder, measuring cup, and etc.

Reaction type is mainly used for chemical reaction, also includes a part of heating lab equipment, mostly are glass or
porcelain equipment. It includes test tube, flask, evaporating dish, crucible, etc.

Vessel type are mainly used to contain or store solid, liquid, gas and chemical reagent, such as reagent
bottle.

Separation type is mainly used for filtration, liquid separation, extraction, evaporation, firing, crystallization,
fraction, including funnel, separating funnel, evaporation dish, flask, condenser, crucible, beaker, etc.

Solid clamp type is mainly used to fix and clamp all kinds of chemistry lab equipment and fitting, including iron
clamp, iron ring, iron stand and funnel support.

Heating type is mainly used for heating chemistry lab equipment and fitting, including test tube, beaker, flask,
evaporating dish, crucible, etc.

Matching type is mainly used to assemble and connect set of apparatus or equipment like glass tube, glass valve,
rubber tube, rubber plug, etc.

For these activities or objectives to be realized, the laboratory is equipped with the different apparatus and
equipment. Proper handling and proper use of each apparatus or equipment is necessary for safety reasons. Awareness and
practice of the procedures and precautions are also important for students to follow.

Procedure:
1. Research on different apparatus and equipment generally found in the laboratory.
2. On a clean sheet of paper / bond paper (short or long), draw five examples of laboratory apparatus and
equipment for each classification and give the name, physical description, and uses or functions for each.
Refer to the ACTIVITY SHEET for the format.
3. Answer the ACTIVITY QUESTIONS.
