Rules in adding -ING

1. General Rule, we just add –ING to the end of the verb

Example: Eat + ing = eating
Go + ing = going
Play + ing = playing
Sleep + ing = sleeping
2. Verbs ending in consonant + E, remove E + ING
Example: Dance + ing = Dancing
Force + ing = Forcing
Ride + ing = Riding
Type + ing = Typing
3. Verbs ending ie, remove ie from the end of the verb + ying
Example: Die + ing = Dying
Lie + ing = Lying
Tie + ing = Tying
4. Verb ending consonant + vowel + consonant and it is only one syllable, we double the end of the
letter + ing
Example: Cut + ing = Cutting
Run + ing = Running
Swim + ing = Swimming
5. Verb ending consonant + vowel + letter L, double the final letter.
Example: Travel + ing = Travelling
Control + ing = Controlling
