SHOPPING MALL SEWER

DESIGN WORKSHOP
ERMAN G. GANGE, PH.D TM, RMP
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR 5

ILOILO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY

LA PAZ, ILOILO CITY
TOPIC OUTLINE
STEPS IN DESIGNING BUILDING DRAINAGE SYSTEM
1. Have an architectural plan from the designer architect
2. Locate a Pipe chase for soil, waste and vent stacks.
3. Find the location of STP/ST or Public Sewer.
4. Draw drainage line from soil stack to the stub-ins or toilets.
5. Locate clean-out, bends and branches.
6. Determine the slope or grade of drainage pipes
7. Size the pipes according to your plumbing analysis
Objective
 At the end of the session the participants are expected to comprehend the
apply the steps in designing sewer system in shopping mall.
 Do the process of designing from locating pipe chase, laying out of pipes,
locating clean-out, use proper fittings and proper pipes sizing.
WORKSHOP PROPER
STEP 1
 Have a copy of architectural plan.
 During the design stage a series of meeting was conducted in all
members of the design team.
 Concerned and inquiries about the propose design was discuss.
A site visit to the proposed project was conducted, this will
familiarized the location of STP and water tank if needed.
A final copy of architectural plan was given to all members of
the design team.
STEP 2
 Locate a Pipe chase for soil and vent stack.
 During the series of meeting a plumbing designer suggest to
have a pipe chase where the soil stack and riser piper will be
located.
 If there is no pipe chase, the plumbing designer locate the
propose soil stack and riser pipe. Be sure that there is no conflict
in all architectural and structural components of the building.
 Locate the soil stack near the toilet or divide the areas in
deferent zones.
STEP 3
 Find the location of STP/Public Sewer
 During the site visit the plumbing designer suggest were
to locate the STP/septic tank.

 Be sure that the location of STP/ST is in the lower portion

of the building to have a proper slope and minimize
the used of sewage pump.
STEP 4
 Draw drainage line from soil stack to the stub-ins or toilets.
 Horizontal Soil Pipe shall be located at the corridor for easy
maintenance.

 Connect all pipes from toilets/stub-in to the horizontal soil main.

 Be sure that the pipe is short and direct as possible.

 Proper types of fitting must be used, as possible minimized it

used.
STEP 5
 Locate clean-out, bends and branches.
 Plumbing code states that clean-out must be installed at every end of
horizontal pipes and in every change of direction.

 Additional clean-out be install if the pipe is more than 15 meters.

 Each cleanout shall be installed so it opens in the direction of flow to

allow cleaning of the soil or waste line or at right angles thereto.

 Cleanouts in piping larger than 51 mm shall have a clearance of not

less than 0.45 m in front of the cleanout.
 Horizontal drainage branch lines, connecting with a vertical
stack, shall enter through 45 or 60 degree wye branches,
combination wye and 1/8 bend branches, sanitary tee or
sanitary tapped tee branches or other approved fittings of
equivalent sweeps.

 Horizontal drainage lines connecting with other horizontal

drainage line shall enter through forty-five degree wye
branches, combination wye and one eight bend branches or
other approved fittings of equivalent sweep.
STEP 6
 Determine the slope or grade of drainage pipes
 Horizontal drainage piping shall be run in practical alignment and at a
uniform slope of not less than 2% or 20 mm/m towards the point of
disposal, provided that , where it is impractical due to the depth of the
street sewer or to adverse structural features or to some irregular
arrangements of affected building or structure to obtain a slope of 2
percent or any such pipe or piping 102 mm or larger in diameter may
have a slope of not less than one 1 percent or 10 mm/m when first
approved by the Administrative Authority.
STEP 7
 Size the pipes according to your plumbing analysis
 Divide the building in deferent zones according to the Soil,
Waste and Vent stack.
 Compute the DFU for every Horizontal soil and waste pipes
to determine its size.
 Add all DFU for horizontal soil pipe to determine the size of
Soil and Vent stack.
 Add the DFU of all soil and waste stack to determine the
size of Building drain going to the STP.
