Assignment C - Part 1

An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

 Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
 You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
 This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
 Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
 You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
 Write 300 - 500 words.

The course book given is a relevant choice for more advanced students, especially the unit given
“Global Learning” as this can peak interest in the students. This unit connects the English class with
globalisation and being global citizens. The language presented is appropriate and logically
structured. The materials given have diverse aspects for language improvement with listening,
reading, writing and speaking activities and practice tasks. The handbook provides practice,
recycling and revision for students that is designed to check the students’ understanding of what is
done in the lesson.

The handbook provides exercises for the students to do and go through after class for extra
practice at home. The design of the handbook is tidy and will hold the students’ interest with the
use of pictures and having people giving their experiences which could also help motivate the
students to learn English and show them that no matter what your background is, it is possible.
The material is impersonal and the intent is clear. The material consists of unemotional discussions
which allow the students to focus on the language, even though the topic may raise concerns it will
keep the students interested in the work being done.

The unit given includes the difference in pronunciation of the different varieties of English,
American and British English which is great and useful as it is not addressed often and students will
be able to learn the different spelling of certain words. The language range in the handbook
regarding globalisation is advanced and allows students to have significant conversations about the
topic.

This handbook would not be expensive in an English speaking country but could cost a bit more for
non-English speaking countries. The handbook seems to not have tests provided or vocabulary lists
and referring pages which would mean the teacher would have to put more time into preparation
when needed.

As a teacher I would use this handbook for my lesson even though I need to put extra preparation
time in for tests and vocabulary lists as well as preparing the teachers part as it is not given in the
unit. I would also add more speaking activities to make sure students are pronouncing English
words correctly and to make sure their pronunciation is on the appropriate level. Overall this
