• What is Sun Shading?

Sun shading is the use of materials to lessen or prevent the heat from the sun
from entering a structure. Sunlight is deflected away from walls and openings
by using solar shading techniques. Techniques for solar shading protect walls
and openings from direct sunlight. As a result, it helps to control internal
temperature.
Using vertical or horizontal pieces, sun shading techniques throw a shadow
over the apertures throughout the most of the day. As the sun travels around
the building, the gadget should cast the largest shadow it can.

• Find a literature related to sun shading and explain how it was used in
sun control and shading devices.

Donald Prowler and Associates

Revised and expanded by Joseph Bourg, Millennium Energy LLC

There are many different reasons to want to control the amount of sunlight
that is admitted into a building. In warm, sunny climates excess solar gain
may result in high cooling energy consumption; in cold and temperate
climates winter sun entering south-facing windows can positively contribute
to passive solar heating; and in nearly all climates controlling and diffusing
natural illumination will improve daylighting.

Well-designed sun control and shading devices can dramatically reduce

building peak heat gain and cooling requirements and improve the natural
lighting quality of building interiors. Depending on the amount and location of
fenestration, reductions in annual cooling energy consumption of 5% to 15%
have been reported. Sun control and shading devices can also improve user
visual comfort by controlling glare and reducing contrast ratios. This often
leads to increased satisfaction and productivity. Shading devices offer the
opportunity of differentiating one building facade from another. This can
provide interest and human scale to an otherwise undistinguished design.

The use of sun control and shading devices is an important aspect of many
energy-efficient building design strategies. In particular, buildings that
employ passive solar heating or daylighting often depend on well-designed
sun control and shading devices.

Thus, solar control and shading can be provided by a wide range of building
components including:

• Landscape features such as mature trees or hedge rows;

• Exterior elements such as overhangs or vertical fins;
• Horizontal reflecting surfaces called light shelves;
• Low shading coefficient (SC) glass; and,
• Interior glare control devices such as Venetian blinds or adjustable
louvers.

Explanation

The actual use of solar shade or sun shading is crucial, particularly in tropical
countries where sun shading may assist lower the heat inside buildings. Sun
shading devices have an impact on a building's outside appearance as well,
which may have good or bad effects. However, blocking undesired solar heat
and ensuring the comfort of persons within the structure are the major goals
of the sun shading equipment.

• Conclusion
Sun shading devices provide a greater level of comfort for people within
the structure because they reduce solar gain and block sunlight. These shade
systems are adaptable, with a build that makes them strong and affordable.
The majority of energy-efficient schools and structures use shading and sun
control mechanisms as part of their architectural design plan to allow natural
light to pass in and reduce the need for artificial lighting. In the end, this
improves the interior environment for residents as it maintains a balance
between temperature, humidity, and light intensity.
A cooler tropical home must be designed with solar shielding or sun
shading. Direct sunlight heats either the interior or outside of a property.
Design strategies that make advantage of solar or sun shading cut down on
heat intake. resulting in a more comfortable and coolly heated home.
Tropical homes no longer include as much solar shading systems.
Commercial buildings tend to have external sun-shading features more often.
However, it is an intelligent choice to put sun shielding strategies into your
property because it can help to save up energy for using air conditioning unit
and other cooling devices.
